If this mindset was adopted in WW2, the Allies would never have attacked and bombed Germany because after all, all Germans weren't Nazis.

When is enough enough?
If you take this mindset to the bitter conclusion then you wouldn't open fire on an enemy tank, on an enemy truck, on an enemy bunker, etc because after all some of the soldiers might not want to be fighting you.
If you are at war with a country, you are defacto at war with everyone and the sooner some people figure this little nugget out the sooner the better.
War is for keeps, you don't get a prize for coming second.
Last night I was watching very interesting documentary on Lincoln and how he quickly figured out how he needed to fight tough to beat the Southern States, unlike his worse than useless commander McClellan who actually forewarned Southern planters that he would be passing through and how he did not want to cause any unnecessary damage to the South. If it was up to him the North would have lost.
On the other hand Sherman knew how to deal with an enemy and bring them to their knees.

very true. That is the reality of war if you want to win you have to hack your enemy to pieces any way you can. it’s not pretty. Currently we are an unfriendly country towards Russia and politically opposed to them but not at war with them and unlikely to be so directly anyway. I think our intelligence services should be hyper vigilant of Russian citizens in this country who may be involved in espionage and helping the Russian war effort in any significant way. But as for rounding up every Russian citizen and deporting them that’s definitely not the answer and would be a massive waste of time. Intelligence led targeted deportations makes more sense. I doubt any of the numbskulls who were on the M50 are in that bracket.

People criticise the Austrian chancellor for meeting Putin today but I think instead we should focus on his words after a very short meeting: he's not optimistic about peace and Russia are preparing for a huge offensive. That's what Ukraine is facing now and it's looking grim.
But one thing baffles me about the Russian approach right now: if they want to incorporate the largely pro Russian east, why are they destroying so much of it first? Will surely alienate even pro Russian citizens and leave them with a massive rebuilding job?

It's Russia. They used human wave attacks against machine guns and may as well have against tanks 20 years later. They starved, murdererd and deported **** knows how many Ukrainians in the Holodomor. They put 10 million (likely more) through the Gulags over a couple of decades, WWII happened in the middle of that period. They abduct children and send them for adoption in Siberia. They levelled Grozny. They had a big part in levelling Aleppo (which somehow the Brits get blamed for, see that piece of **** convicted today of killing the MP). Razing cities for them is a legitimate tactic. Killing old women on their doorstep is a legitimate tactic. Rape is pretty much a legitimate tactic. The Ukrainians know all of this, the Poles, Latvians, Lithuanians, Finns, all their neighbours are well. While some who were on the fence and were more Ukrainian, yeah they'll go to Ukraine. But in the end the "proper" Russians will go along with whatever the Czar says because it's all NATO's fault.

I'd have a read of the transcript of what he said in the Austrian embassy in Moscow. He made reference to prosecuting Russia for war crimes and said he saw no cause for optimism in the meeting with Herr Putin.
