If being an unaligned country with a large army is no deterrent to Putin's ambitions is it time for ROI to join Nato?
Zzzzzzzz.....
Sweden and Finland set to join NATO by the summer, which means if you're looking to invade a non aligned European country that's as capable as a new born child when it comes to defending itself, then you'll look no further than Ireland.
Squeaky bum time for the anti US internationalists
my thoughts exactly... unless they get a route through the Balkans in the mean time (I'm thinking if they take Transnistria, Hungary will show their true colours and they have a land bridge from Russia to Serbia then)...
Those missile drills off the coast weren't for the craic, it's constant probing looking for opportunity...
Be quite handy for those landing ships which originated from the Baltic to take a quick left turn instead of going through the English channel...
This is the kind of stuff that most Irish just raise their eyebrows at and chuckle, I'd imagine.
Invade Ireland and then what? As soon as they made a move on anywhere else what do you think would happen?
Russia wouldn't need to invade any other European country if Le Pen wins the presidency of France in two weeks and breaks with NATO like she promised to and realigns France with Russia.
Le Pen is winning f*ckall, she got walloped in 2017 in the final vote and Macron will win at a canter again this time.
France has its underlying problems, but they will not elect a far-right Putin flunkie that wants to undermine the EU.
Putinist daydreams of a France cleaved away from the democratic liberal order will remain just that, reveries for the nihilistic.
According to the BBC, Le Pen has a 49% chance to win the presidency of France in 2022
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-61061230
In comparison, the Brexit referendum in 2016 was predicted by polls to have only a 48% chance of a Leave vote: https://whatukthinks.org/eu/opinion-polls/poll-of-polls/
At a canter, eh?
Do you think Maccers shares your certainty? By democratic, liberal order do you mean EU membership and selling weapons to Russia?😄
Check back in on April 24th. All of Le Pen's Putin skeletons will come out of the closet.
She's winning nothing. France doesn't want to leave NATO, and France doesn't want to leave the EU.
Like many republicans Francey, you're a strategic genius. No wonder they gave up on the military carry on and settled on administrating NI for the English
Invade Ireland and then what lol
I've thrown my anchor down on this. I said in another thread that I'll eat a boiled shoe if Le Pen wins. And I'll repeat it here.
(For the record, way back in 2016, I called Brexit as a realistic prospect, and wasn't at all surprised by Trump winning)
See you on the 24th
Republicans can't shake off their kneejerk anti-Britishness and their links to Putin were all about that.
Go on then tell us what they would do after invading Ireland.
You can't can you, without risking being laughed out of the room.
Russia can't manage to invade their next door neighbour by land successfully. How on earth do they manage an amphibious invasion of an island on the opposite side of all but two NATO countries from themselves?
And for what purpose would they be doing so other than to attack the UK, so why would the UK let them establish a presence in Ireland, and why would the rest of NATO allow their supply lines to sail past through the baltic and med?
Even if for some daft reason the UK didn't respond directly to this Russian invasion of Ireland and just sat by and waited, how does Russia then get supplies there? All EU airspace would be closed to Russian planes, then stick a blockade across next to Gibraltar, Denmark and the Bosphorus and their only supply route is by boat around the top between Norway and Iceland (which is presumably only good for a few months a year) , or sailing all the way round from the Pacific.
If they are showing themselves to be militarily incompetent at the moment with a land invasion, going for Ireland as their next target would be a whole scale of idiocy further.
I don't think we should join NATO. That doesn't mean we shouldn't vastly improve our defence capability to make it not worth the cost of taking the country. Better army, better equipped navy, drones and some modern jets. A bit like Switzerland.
Macron is the Rothschild's puppet/ex-employee. Won't be losing any election over there, unfortunately.
Is that Switzerland, the really rich place that's surrounded by the alps on all sides and then NATO countries beyond that, with no sea border. The place where nearly every citizen has served in the military and, shamefully, does not share our enthusiasm for immigration and handing out passports like smarties?
I have a funny feeling the Swiss model might not work here.
We're not in a room Francie and if we were the biggest laugh would be had from your plan for a UI twenty years on.
Who said they had to invade Francie?
They already gave us a taste of how we'd react (or fail to lol) when a few Russian ships showed up off our coast, wandering around where our comms cables run. We know the NATO and the UK are under no obligation to act. And for a good republican, to expect the Brits to show up to defend us...well, I know contradictions are a way of life for Northern SF types but British troops tooling around Irleand might be a bit much even for your levels of tolerance for cognitive dissonance
Perhaps we'll send the Sammy Beckett out to launch flares at them if they show up in earnest
The idea of neutrality is antiquated in this day and age, ireland must be ready to do its part in defence of the EU against russian invasions.
All one has to do is look at the trend over the past few months. The trend is increasing support to join NATO and re-evaluating Ireland's position on Neutrality.
The cranks and Putin-Bots can deny those facts all they want.
Like the sooner you guys get around to explaining to what end all of this would be for, the better.
I am beginning to wonder how you all sleep at night!
If what you say is true, an EU Defence Force or such will replace it in Europe, with Germany and France leading the line there. It will only hasten Ireland's involvement.
And the poll I posted came after all the pitches from Neale and Leo. Seems the Irish people still say No by a huge majority.
Republicans aren't anti British, sure their upper ranks are agents of the British state now. All the militancy is performative now, wander around with a few flags and berets over Easter but after that it's back to the monthly direct debit from the chancellor of the exchequer into their accounts. Not really surprising that they'd look to mother England for matters of defence 😂
Why would the British intervene if they cut our comms?
Which is it lads, NATO won't care if they invade/mess with our comms, or they will intervene to defend us?
It is ironic that the 6 counties being in NATO gives us much more security than anything else.
The UI fanatics will have a hard time with this one.
"No" to what?
You sound like Ian Paisley.
It's a bit more complicated than that, you know it but you play stupid because you want to have the same tired arguments again and again and again....zzz.
Put it this way, in 20 years' time, we are going to have approx 30 Billion euro worth of off-shore wind, supplying us and the EU with renewable energy via interconnectors.
If you think that won't be a target for any rouge nation-state, then you are a fool.
The world is changing and the way we think about defence will change too.
These hypothetical Russian tanks driving along some border road and they mistakenly find themselves repeatedly entering NATO territory before they know where they are.
