Ask a person campaigning for the sanctions against Israel why they're not campaigning about China's treatment of Uyghur Muslims or what's happening to civilians in Myanmar. See what kind of a response you get. One person says 'Yes, but what about this?', which can easily be answered by 'Yes, but what about that?'
If we cannot care equally and simultaneously about every conflict and injustice being perpetrated in the world, does that give us no right to care about anything? And if no-one has a right to care about anything, then who will do anything about injustice? And if no-one does anything about injustice, then what kind of hellscape world would we be living in? This is the cynicism that whataboutery promotes, either accidentally or on purpose (I cast no aspersion on the intent of any individual proponent). It seeks to make everyone question their right to act or speak out about something because of an alleged hypocrisy due to something that is essentially an impossibility for people, i.e. equally caring about all things all the time, and ignores a basic facet of human nature, i.e. people will care more about things that are novel, are closer to their home and have a direct effect upon them.

Id say the 4 being expelled are only the tip of the iceberg too. I think the problem is the Irish embassy in Moscow only has 6 staff so now the DFA will be fully expecting the Russians to expel four of them in retribution. Which leaves just two staff running the embassy and providing consular assistance to Irish citizens living in Russia. Had we expelled 6 or more from here theyd be looking at potentially shuttering the Moscow embassy.
It might be more to do with proximity than skin colour.
Also, this Russian invasion may be easier to solve than the Israel - Palestine problem.
