If you are referring to the Ukrainian folks, there might be a few days they can start work straight away. The govt have a facility in the airport where they get sorted with PPS #, visa documents etc before they have even left the grounds of the airport.
They can walk into a job that day if they had one lined up.

People are not happy at the prospect of housing and providing services to an unknown number of refugees with no end date in sight. We are a small country, we can’t handle problems of this size with zero planning or caps. It’s pretty straightforward. I have major concerns about financing this with our existing debt and rising interest rates.
How will you feel when your kids future is hampered by this and college becomes unaffordable? When there are no old folks home places or hospital beds or services available as a result of all this? When you can’t get into a hospital?
These are the reasons you plan for these situations and place manageable caps on them.

There was a woman on the news a few weeks ago that has an autistic kid. They haven't had a 1 to 1 meeting with a therapist since pre covid n there's loads in the same boat. Some specialist was on saying the early years are absolutely crucial for development.
A month before there was a woman with mica in the house in Donegal a badger would nearly fit through the holes never mind rats.
Both issues not sorted due to a lack of funding n I wish them luck getting sorted in the future while our politicians play the best boys in Europe.

Indeed. Setting Autistic children, Mica homeowners and people on disability benefits against Ukranians fleeing from war achieves nothing though. Unless of course the aim is to divide and to sew resentment and hatred against Ukranians. There's plenty of money in this country. governments cannot budget accordingly and waste money in all areas. That's a governance issue.

We do have some that are cradle to grave welfare recipients, no long term plan to get off welfare. Get pregnant as a teenager and on the housing list, pop out a few more to get moved up. Can you blame them? If the alternative is working a minimum wage job and renting for the rest of you life with no stability. It’s not sustainable though.
The ‘homeless’ problem is really an addiction problem and you can’t house them due to the problems their addiction creates.
People have issues with the fact that suddenly the government seem to think they can house, feed, educate, pay and provide health services for an unknown number of refugees from a country with a population ten times ours. When they are already failing to do these things for the existing population. I ask again, HOW?

Yet again, the Department of Justice show themselves incapable and unwilling to apply our immigration laws. Four Indian guys standing outside the reception centre where the Ukrainians are being hosted and saying they're from Donesk.
I suppose for a lot of us here, this is why we're worried about this crisis. It's not that we have any issue with the nuts and bolts of what's being done(helping a set number for a certain period of time), it's that for twenty years the Department of Justice has shown a complete lack of willingness to apply our laws.
If any other Department acted outside of the laws and processes would there not be a tribunal where the Sec General and higher staff are made to explain why they aren't following the guidelines?.
Imagine if Social Welfare refused 20k claims over twenty years but only actually cut the money off a few hundred of that number... Would questions not be asked?.
It's hardly a coincidence to me that living standards here have slipped in the last twenty years which runs parallel to the DP process.
The system where no matter who comes in, from where, for what reason and does whatever when they're here... Never get deported.

i don’t believe it’s a check / verification… neither does our other cousin who up to a year ago, worked for said government department.. it’s likely being done on the basis that they want her off this payment as they do others to enable more ability for OUR government to look after non citizens and non taxpayers, which they are and will be doing much more of.

I’ve empathy for the Ukrainians but our country and it’s people to try to absorb a 4% population increase over a few weeks and provide all those people with accommodation, money, healthcare etc…

People have to be audited if they are on welfare. It's common sense. I do agree that there are people working in deasp who clearly get enjoyment from humiliating and looking down on welfare receipients. No doubt about it and everyone who has had to deal with them is well aware that the job does seem to attract a high percentage of those kinds of people but what can you do. Also, if we didn't get 40 billion euro from the EU to upgrade the country, the welfare system wouldn't be what it is. So for someone talking about the detriments of the EU, you sure do like the welfare system that it helped create.

and we’ve payed millions and probably billions in fees to the EU as members….played a proactive part in its success.
