Yup, they developed their own, plus apparently the US will be sending some of theirs over
Ukrainian forces also used an anti-tank weapon (ATGM) to hit a Russian patrol boat close to shore.
I wholly understand but would also worry that excessive punitive measures would lionise the support for Putin in a "see the west hates you" propaganda campaign.
But as I said, I understand why it's necessary, I just feel uneasy with it.
"You think we in Russian are backward but we have just invented out own microchip...and we are building bigger ones all the time..."
So apparently the cause of the ship fire may have been cluster warhead on an SRBM.
Note, such warheads are contrary to the Convention on Cluster Munitions adopted in Dublin in 2008, but like most countries which might actually need the things, Ukraine was not a signatory.
I would note, I'm not convinced this actually is the successful attack. There were a couple of tries, this one may have been from a few days ago?
Could be propaganda, but Ukraine is claiming that a Bayraktar TB2 drone fired missiles at the landing ship, amazing if true.
I am not getting worked up about anything :)
Some folks are calling for a complete boycott of everything to Russia. As I pointed out, this is something that is clearly going to be counter-productive in the long-term.
FT piece via IT on debate in China.
They have the Neptune Anti Ship cruise missile that came into service in 2018 but theres been no evidence of its use. They either are saving them for the assault on Odessa or they don't work.
The US are talking about sending some but it would be a while before they are on the Ukrainians hands.
That aside the loss of that ship is another major blow to the Russians ability to move equipment and troops which is wonderful.
World leaders will have to consider what is "excessive". Personally I do not think any of the current sanctions remotely approach this threshold in the context of what Russia is doing in Ukraine (just look at the post from Dohnjoe above posted at 5:25)
Strange to see war and aftermath recorded in such quality, feels almost surreal. Also looks like more progress around Kyiv
The cloud cover doesn't look right for it being this morning. My suspicion is that this is from a few days ago when RT News claimed their air defences had shot down a missile. I'm not sure if there are multiple missiles or if it's just one missile which deployed its cluster munitions and then the body of the missile tumbled to the ground afterwards?
The below is from this morning and seems to show an initial explosion which would only really be consistent with a single cluster munition or small missile. Granted it's so far away there could have been an existing small fire which isn't obvious; very hard to tell.
Other options are available including Russian produced goods.
It's been made out that if it wasn't for nestle Children would starve in Russia utter shite
Yes they will. And realistically, the important opinion of what is excessive will be that of the innocent Russians. If it increases Putin's support base, it will not bode well for anyone.
Again, I'm not saying the sanctions are wrong.
And with regards the media reports, I am very uncomfortable with, but fully understanding of, the fact we will rarely hear anything that is 100% true outside of blatantly obvious events.
It's such a terrible situation.
Keep im coming
"Anyways let’s move on from this"
"Oh my she must have had loads of Nestlé baby formula as a child to afford this castle"
I never said you were outraged. I said you were fretting over it, which you were and still are.
As for the horses mouth, plenty video posted on here from Russian State TV.
One video today showing a city wiped off the face of the planet, with the narrative the Ukrainians did it.
But you "prefer" to see that level of bat shít reporting, ahhhh why? Because you think it's some form of counter balance? It isn't.
I have been watching Kremlin spokespeople give their side of the "story" for the past month, full interviews reported on "western media".
But for some reason you are still banging the falsity they are not getting their "story" across.
What gives?
That's almost certainly going to be putin's play and spin on this. It already is and "the decadent west hates us" has long been part of his playbook and he picked it up from the vast majority of the previous inhabitants of the Kremlin. Gorby was the rare exception to that longstanding rule.
And it will and has worked. It worked for a long time when the USSR was on paper more equitable, you just had to give up certain rights and that was largely accepted as wider loyalty to Mother Russia and the Cause. It'll still work, but this time his spin clock is ticking like it never did before.
His other spin that he pushes is that under him "Russia Never Had It so Good" is against him. And yes, it's largely true, they never have. Even those forty and up have what their parents and grandparents could barely dream of having and those under forty certainly have far more again. They've grown up with a "freer" Russia with pizza and iphones and youtube and instagram and foreign travel for many and certainly the possibility of it and more. They've also never been so exposed to the West and the variety of what Western thinking has to offer, or nearly so exposed to Western tech in their products, local products too.
Sanctions like these would have barely been noticed in the 1970's or the 1980's, as they were far more apart, very self reliant and far less reliant on the wider world. If they had a car it was built in the Soviet Union, if they were lucky enough to fly on a plane it was a Soviet built plane and all the food in their Soviet built fridge, cooked on their Soviet built cooker was set on their Soviet built tables, while they watched Soviet stuff on their Soviet telly. Today, even Sukhoi's latest "Russian built" airliner has Western engines and avionics. Their old world is gone. The Soviet Union tha putin misses is dead and it can't come back now.
He knows it and he knows they know it too. His hinterland will likely take it on the chin as many wouldn't have noticed the passing of the USSR, the crazy times of the 90's and the economic upswing since. However those in the urban areas and the west of the country noticed all of that and they'll notice this too and their resolve won't last long IMHO. I can't see anything like a palace revolt and certainly not a popular citizen one, but I can see him seeing the wind is blowing against him and climbing down, while spinning it as enough of a "win" to cling onto that self delusion for him and the Russian people.
If he digs in and sees his Ukraine war as a long term one, he'll watch the Afghanistan of the 80's come back tenfold and that was one of the reasons for the fall of his beloved empire.
Jaysus Francie, you must not have been paying attention, Putin fúcked the line out the window.
It's not just new rules it's a new game.
I just watched footage of a European City being wiped off the face of the planet and you are whittling about lines being crossed over formula?
😕
Eh I think it's reasonable to want to minimise the opportunities for the Kremlin to spin and manipulate anti-West sentiment
Because they just won't flat out lie to garner anti-West sentiment, they need reasons. 😂
"Invaders force 402,000 Ukrainians, including 84,000 children, to evacuate to Russia – Denisova" https://en.interfax.com.ua/news/general/817493.html
That is just so depressing and hopeless seeming. The world's worst hostage situation. Russia is going to clothe, feed and house this number? Slave labour? Death camp?
Future Janissaries.
On the plus side. They will have access to baby formula because thats a line thst shouldnt be crossed.
I recall I saw a Chinese reporter summarise the US pitch to China over Russia-Ukraine as being "Help us attack your ally, so we can attack you later". The US has already clearly identified China as rival which needs to be crushed. That is going be the decisive factor in any Chinese debate regarding the conflict. Russia is a reliable partner/ally to China. The US/EU/NATO is hostile to China.
The problem with Ukraine becoming the new Afghanistan for Russians is that Ukraine becomes the new Afghanistan for Ukrainians too. Petty warlords, mass proliferation of military weapons, extremist ideologies, tribalism, widespread illiteracy, crushing economic failure, etc.
We have to hope that given the stakes are so low - no membership of NATO and recognition of the reality of Crimea and the DNR/LNR - and the suffering so great that a peace deal will be found before Ukraine becomes the new Afghanistan for anyone.
NSM or Harpoon would be a good choice, lightweight and easy to use and store, and you can send many if needed
Once Ukraine gets their swithblade drones there will be no hiding no matter where they dig in
Let's be concerned about Russian children meanwhile.
