The master of whataboutery, frankly.
The problem with referendums in an occupied area is Russia just ship out the locals and ship in loyalists, hey presto full support for Russias pov
...but short-sighted.
Now this is starting to be ridicolous from the russians
Now they have started to use unguided missiles to lob them as artillery
Really shows the russian desperation
Stingers must have made an impression
Whataboutery: the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counter-accusation or raising a different issue.
I'm assuming you aren't accusing me of whataboutery?
Me bringing up my concerns with a line in an article regarding Nestle being criticised for supplying Russians with essential items such as baby food couldn't be whataboutery.
Is it because I was then accused that I was equating it with Russians eating easter eggs while Ukranian kids eat dogs? Because that would be whataboutery.
What the actual f*** lmao. That is the stupidest thing I've ever seen
I thought your post couldn't be correct and you must have misunderstood something but nope, you're spot on.
I said it should be a referendum of the Ukrainian people, I.e the whole country. A local ref would have been acceptable also, if the Russians didn't try what you describe. I'm not in the mood to countenance giving control of a democratic mechanism to a country with no actual interest in democracy, like Russia.
Very good item on tonight's BBC News about how the soldiers and citizens of the town of Voznesensk in southern Ukraine single-handedly repelled a Russian invasion and sent them packing :
Not once in the run up or during this war have the Russian government told the truth or attempted diplomacy in good faith.
There is absolutely no reason to believe they would be willing to negotiate any kind of agreement.
It's is clear that the goal here is to take control of oil and gas reserves and the Black Sea. Decimating Ukraine and installing a puppet government solidifies their control. The Russians have every intention of reducing an entire country to rubble because they are politically tactless.
Herded into a kill zone and destroyed...by a group of civilians. 😁
Be that as it may be, if they shut down the plant, 40'000 jobs gone, now add that to the other job losses due to other company's pulling out, and you will have a sizable chunk of the work force becoming very disgruntled. And who knows where or what that might lead to? Maybe older Russians follow the Putins propaganda controlled media, but for sure, the younger ones do not, Its just a matter of if or when it will reach critical mass. And if that happens, it will become uncontrollable.
As much as I would love this to be true….I don’t see Russian people revolting because of access to western goods. expecting a Uprising from this is as effective as dropping leaflets from a plane to change hearts and minds. Don’t forget the population just see this as an attack from the west which it is. It’s an economic attack to stop financing the war.
where it makes a difference is western companies are not financing Russias war by paying taxes on goods sold in Russia. The less finance Russia has the better as it means less money too finance the war.
Its not about access to western goods, its about not having a job to pay for local produce, never mind western good's. Spoke to a Russian friend of mine last night, who lost her job ( not sanctions related) and she was telling me how hard her life has become. Now she is in a panic, because jobs are drying up due to so many foreign company's leaving. Oh, and BTW, she knows very well what's going on in Ukraine, and whose fault it is. So while Putin and his inner circle might not feel any bad effects from the sanctions ordinary people will ( like always, unfortunately) and pressure against the war will mount ,
Cant believe it its bonkers stuff - and yes absolute desperation. There is speculation that Russia becomes more dangerous, due to desperation.
But i dont know anymore - I saw ship to ship missiles fired in land earlier today - i cant understand any of it - These memes are starting to look less like fantasy and more like reality
It's a common form of attack, there is footage of them doing the same thing from Mi35s and Ka-52s in Syria as well.
It makes sense. The rockets are an area effect weapon anyway, so as long as the ballistic computers have the correct setting, which they do, there's a reasonable chance of a hit. According to the manual, 50% of the rockets will hit in a 100x100 square at 4km, 90% within 150mx150m. See from about 1:40 on here.
The unpowered bomb equivalent is called "Lob tossing".
Military land update for today - stark in places but i cannot understand what is actually going on overall - its crazy
i actually find that fascinating - not a military expert but it makes some sense i guess, - would have assumed it to be a waste of resource - i stand corrected though
Well Moldova is actively occupied by Russian forces as supposed "peacekeepers" in Transnistria; which sits alongside much of the Ukraine-Moldova border. It is also not in the EU or NATO so hardly surprising they're either not allowed or not comfortable overflying it.
Also I suspect the increased movement might be a standard precursor to a US Presidential visit to eastern Europe.
I suspect you might already have seen these posts but for anyone else wondering about the kinds of surveillance NATO/EU is engaging in over eastern Europe check out the below Twitter account. Note that the circles around the aircraft indicate the estimated maximum ranges.
The most interesting craft to me is the ~$150 million RQ-4 Global Hawk drone which flies so high it can get visuals right into central Ukraine.
You are describing the Russian leadership with great accuracy, so whats the difference between them and these guests?
When is Ireland going to send some weapons, rifles, machine guns , ammunition even. A token amount is enough to show solidarity. Preferably some of our anti tank rockets.
Well you and other people can describe his asking for military assistance from NATO and European countries as desperate all you like. Knock yourself out if that makes you feel great to belittle a man who has and is showing immense courage and inspirational leadership. For the people that matter Zelenskyy's leadership in this dark time for Ukraine has been nothing short of incredible.
Hahah brilliant last line there got a good laugh out of that one puerile that it is.
Tubridy comments about his dress and facial appearance were at best as injudicious as his flippant chicken kiev tactless comments.
We already sent medical supplies and armour; why would sending weapons show solidarity any better? Aside from the fact they already have thousands upon thousands of better weapons than we could supply.
The HSE also sent a fleet of ambulances and the Air Corps has conducted at least one medical flight from Poland to Ireland. Plus we have taken in thousands of refugees and will continue to do so.
Politically we have also been signatories to various declarations asking for more support to Ukraine in the form of both military aid and otherwise; along with condemnation of Russia.
Weapons are the only thing that will stop this
Biden and UK intelligence both have made recent statements they believe the Russians could be preparing to use chemical weapons.
.
Okay but again: there are plenty of better (or equivalent) weapons than Ireland has available and in much greater quantities that have already been or are in the process of being sent to Ukraine.
"The Russians have every intention of reducing an entire country to ruble because they are politically tactless."
This typo also works...
Ireland uses NATO spec ammunition and modern machine guns. It also has AT rockets such as the Javelin. So what we can send is up there in terms of quality but not quantity.
We can send these alongside the other donations.
