If you think it is a slum, travel the world and see real poverty. We do a lot of whining in this country, but the reality is the poorest in Ireland are far better off than most people in developing countries.
Because you seems to believe once a place isn't falling down or covered in mold it's fine whereas I believe everyone is entitled to a decent standard of living not just those who exploit others. Would you live in one of those flats? Would you fcuk I bet you live in a nice house.
that is why you don't answer questions?
edit incase you accuse me of not answering your questions. Yes I would live in a place like that and have as have my friends.
And even though not a question, yes I live in a very nice house that is actually too big for our needs after living in place like that.
Ah shure things are worse in Somalia so we should just accept poor conditions and standards here.
It isnt luxury living for sure but its not a slum. There is far worse out there. The tenants appear to keep the place quite untidy which isnt helping the appearance - the landlord can't be blamed for messy, unclean tenants. There would be alot of people happy to rent a place there - for some working people all they want is somewhere to sleep and wash.
A lot of these places are being converted to better living spaces. But that means they fit less of them in the same space. I had friends who used to live in a similar one in Rathmines. The mezzanine meant they couldn't stand up straight in the kitchen area, bathroom or bedroom area.
Better standards should be possible. But the current housing situation makes it harder on people, and they have no choice but to accept places like this.
Can you tell us what you think is so good about accommodation like this?
Beautiful house, in a lovely location. Why on earth would anyone pay big money for it when you'd be living cheek to jowl with some randomer?
Ah God bless the poor landlord sure isn't he only doing out of the goodness of his heart God bless his generosity allowing people a place to wash and sleep and only charging them 1k a month for the privilege what a humanitarian. He's so generous that 3 of his 6 tenants even have a place to sh!te what luxury what benevolence.
There would be nobody happy to rent such a kip unfortunately there are plenty who have no choice but to and the scum selling and I'm sure buying this have no problem exploiting that desperation.
The point is people are calling it a slum and as they are naming it as such they should explain why it is such.
I have been around long enough and enough places to know this is not a slum as I would define it so if others define it differently they should be able to explain it.
Lots of pros, good location, space seems fine for a single person, bright, clean (ignore the tenant's clutter), cheaper than a modern build.
What your friend lived in is not this place, unless you know you can't standup in parts of the place it is irrelevant.
What is the standard you are saying is not be met here? The place has been like that for nearly 60 years. They got rid of all the bedsits and caused huge housing issues and that was before the current housing issues. They really will never get rid of pre 63 let layout as it is so important to the housing needs and makes sure older buildings aren't left vacant. What am I to do with a Georgian house where the doorways up stairs are too low? Tear out original gerogian features and put in modern doorways and doors? Want to lose your historical buildings deem the unlivable.
I know plenty of people from my area that work in Dublin during the week - 6 o clock on Thursday evening their out of Dublin back home to their nice houses down the country. Monday to Friday they need somewhere to sleep - thats it they dont need fancy living space they just need basic facilities. You do realise that there is plenty of people who have to rent just for work purposes but dont need it as their main residence.
Given the choice I would prefer renting somewhere like this than having to share some filthy house with other tenants. If you cleared out those flats of all the current tenants mess and clutter its not bad spaces.
I agree. If it were tidied up a little, I would happily stay there if was living in the country and had to be in Dublin 3 or 4 days a week.
Doesn't seem to be a lot of storage space in any of the rooms, bar the kitchen cupboards.
Never understood why Irish people don't use the high quality divan/sofabeds they use in Polish and Russian apartments. Not the cheap pull out things they sell here.
It would give a lot more space in places like that.
I can tell you why. If you are going for higher rent and you mention a folding or moving bed the prospective tenants don't like it and will often ask it to be replaced. Happened to me with a very high quality Murphy bed. The idea was if you chose you could put up the bed and pull out the desk rather than use the shared space. Ideal for work or study I though. It wasn't appreciated and would have been cheaper to buy a normal bed. It was "broken" in the end "had" to be replaced according to the tenant. Bought them a crap Bargintown bed and mattress instead and put it in my house instead and I am very happy with the extra option in that bedroom. Wife does yoga in there now.
Lots of Irish people are very close minded when it comes to the weirdest stuff.
They aren't showing pictures of the bedrooms as you literally can't stand up in them. 😂
Mezzanine beds aren't rooms. I have to ask how old you are that you have never seen or experienced such things. Is everyone here a Tiger Cub that lived in luxury their entire lives?
Tell me you're a landlord without telling me you're a landlord.
Is that a house in the bottom centre of the pic? Do they have to drive into their house through your garden?
If so that is madness considering the price.
Imagine expecting to be able to stand up in your bedroom the insolence of the peasantry these days. It would be much better if they simply worked their menial jobs in silence so they could afford to hand over 1k a month to the likes of you so they can wash and sleep in a box.
It isn't a bedroom that is the point. Can we take it you don't live in a nice house and in some hovel because a landlord is forcing you to rent from them?
It appears to be so! Also if you look at the garden photos, the house looks directly onto your garden, zero privacy at all.
The only solution for the house for sale is, sadly, to turn it into offices, where privacy might be less of an issue.
Mod - Thread has been going off on all sorts of tangent and is getting properly derailed at this point. Can we get back on topic please?
It's the old stables building for Roebuck Manor

This could be a lovely house if you had an absolute ton of money to pour into restoring or renovating it. Lots of original features still. I think it is probably overpriced at €120k though
I'd say that was a beautiful, elegant sight in its heyday.
120k for that. Madness. Even if I had the money I wouldn't pay it. Cost a lot of money to get rid of the damp/mould. You could go at it cheaply and a couple of years into ownership the mould will reappear.
I don't know about an outdoor pool in Leitrim!
The Fidge/Freezer looks fairly modern, but the rest of the house looks like it hasn't been used or lived in for years.
It looks fairly decent in 2009 (Fecking 13 years ago 😫) - https://goo.gl/maps/MHEMDGAK2i2nB4h56
But there is a caravan there, so maybe they were living in that while starting to do it up?
I need a magnifying glass to look at those pictures.
Its needs a lot of work thats for sure but you can tell it once was a beautiful home. You would need to possibly put €200K+ into it to get is to todays standards and keep the original features. I love old houses like this - the only negative ( aside from the money it would eat up) I see for this house it that is is very close to the road - there is no real privacy.
It's nice, not sure I would pay €485K for it though.
