What agreement are you referring to? The Budapest Memorandum on Ukraine giving up its weapons definitely didn't oblige the USA to protect Ukraine.

As for the US going off and doing deal with Russia/Iran, it would mean the end of NATO if the US went solo.

The thing is for Russians, this is a completely normal life. They, their parents, grandparents etc. grew up in it. The positive side is that you don't see the kind of hooligasm / vandalism we have here,,,crowds of feral youths gathering in the transport system by arrangement, and then wearing masks, crashing a store and carrying out a mass robbery or accosting joggers and cyclists out exercising and robbing / terrifying them. You do not mess with the police. I witnessed a road traffic accident, where a seriously drunk driver crashed into another car, upending it, and pushing it into the ditch on the side of the road. ( they have a huge drink driving problem in Russia, so much so that it figures in the death statistic) In a very short time, 2 policemen arrived in their Lada police car. While one took statements, and arrested both drivers, drunk and sober, the other police man set about getting other car back on the road. He did this simply by waiting until a bus came along the road, he stopped it, went on board and ordered all males off. He then ordered them to lift the car back onto its wheels, and pushed it back on the road. Job done. I would not like to be the man ( or woman) reported for making a problem on the street's or public transport, and have the Police waiting for me at the next stop ( and this was even long before the present clampdown began ). But for Russians this is all normal behavior.

That's incredibly dubious for me anyway. When you hear of others being arrested, the crap kicked out of them, some held for days in gaol, just for being part of a protest or holding up a blank sign and putin just brought in a potential 15 year sentence for going against the Kremlin spin and she goes on the most watched Kremlin mouthpiece TV station with a No War sign and walks free with a 200 quid fine? That's fishier than a fish market in a heatwave. With extra fish. Clumsy too, which the cynic in me reckons all is not above board there.

I'd say that if they want to desert, and there's opposition from above, then the vehicles seem to develop serious mechanical faults, which immobilizes them, but when its a unanimous decision, they down tools and hit for the hills, leaving everything intact.

This story about the Russian anti-war lady seems too convenient a distraction from the reality that innocent Ukrainian citizens are being murdered and terrorised. It's all a bit cagey really.

I'm scratching my head at the idea that the regime staged a protest against itself and its conduct of the war on national television. How would that one actually work? I've seen these conspiracy theories all over social media today, but it seems a bit bonkers.
I saw similar but worse footage yesterday from Azerbajan drone attacks on Armenian soldiers, mostly hiding in WWI type trenches, no where to run & some of the poor sods flying through the air in pieces. Those Bayraktar drones are about as fast as WW1 planes, & would I assume could be taken out by modern ground anti aircraft systems easily enough, IF they are spotted. Supposedly they can loiter for 20 plus hours & fly at just above tree height. I guess they might even be too slow for some anti aircraft systems to lock onto.
Sometimes slow flying weapons are effective in striking at the enemy, RN Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers disabled the Bismark Battleship, who's air defence guns were expecting much faster attacking planes.

Simple old fashioned kit can sometimes be very effective in war. Or a quick bespoke upgrade, like fitting 60 year old rocket propelled grenades with 3D printed wing fins to Kamikaze drones being supposedly used by the Ukrainian forces.
