Unless that results in these popupations embracing the West, and I don't think the Western powers are very good at winning people over, I can't see how that is going to end well.

That's probably related to Russia's decision to suspend food exports to the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia's satellite states) last week. At the time, Belarus was named as an exception. If Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan give Putin what he asks for they'll probably get their allocation of food stuffs restored.
