When this coincides with mine he's right (tots obvs), however sometimes it does come across as quite evangelical. He and Mayo's interview with the creators of Anomalisa really frustrated me with their, apparently clueless, baiting of Kauffman and friend regarding Inside out, a film which had already beaten theirs in a number of awards. S&M apparently couldn't fathom why their interviewees grew increasingly taciturn and hostile, when they were the instigating factors. They've subsequently turned the incident into an amusing anecdote of how the Anomalisa pair were uncouth, impolite and condescending towards them rather than a cautionary tale of not poking a bear when you know it's already in a bad mood. So fun, but sometimes is right up it's own arse.

A bit gutted....this is the best film podcast about for me :(
Yeah, I just saw the Guardian article. I'm a couple of weeks behind due to illness (and mainly listening in the gym). Will be sad to see it go. Haven't missed an episode in well over a decade (does that make me MTL or LTL?)
Aww, that's absolutely gutting! One of the few pods I never miss an episode off (at least, the Prime crew episodes), even if sometimes I fall behind.
Wonder who they'll choose to replace them. Hopefully Ben Bailey Smith/Doc Brown in Simon's place anyway... for Mark's spot, anyone except Robbie Collin!
Their talk suggested they'll still be producing something. It's entirely possible they'll just continue the podcast on their own - they wouldn't be the first to do that; and a big chunk of theirs already wasn't on the BBC5 show anyway.
Still, a shame. Shouldn't be a surprise given the budgetary purge the Beeb are on at the moment. Gotta be honest and nobody of their intermittent replacements come close to the same humour and entertainment so I won't bother continuing to tune in. Hard to replace the kind of "bickering old couple" chemistry Mayo and Kermode had going.
I actually haven't listened since Christmas but I would still look at Mark's reviews on YouTube. Still sad though, I always skipped it when the subs were on.
I didn't mind the subs for variety. I'm out now for a walk and listen to another episode. Although perhaps I should ration them!
Agree with a lot of that. Found the replacements quite poor any time they were on and I swiftly switched off.
Anyways, judging by Marks tweet and the specific line "end of the show on 5 live" it seems as if they have plans in place to continue elsewhere.
Must keep an eye and ear open; cos due to BBC rules, they won't be able to tell people on the current show where or what they're headed to. I hadn't even realised Simon Mayo was an author until it was referenced in an episode, during the non BBC portion.
I think it will be back somewhere else. I found the podcast this week quite emotional. I have been listening for a looooong time. There is definite demand for it I would think.
Kermode on film (which I would recommend) is well worth a listen...but isn't quite the same.
To be honest I saw this coming a while back.
It was always a bit awkward after Mayo left (forced off) his drivetime show on Radio 2. I noticed the plugs for their Scal shows increased in the last few weeks, which woudn't be happening if they had a long term BBC future.
As for the stand ins, I always like Sanjeev Bhaskar, and Robbie Collin.
I would say there's definitely going to be a podcast though.
I pretty much switch off when i hear the stand ins. They're just very meh.
The two lads have the biggest movie podcast in the world don't they? They probably just want to make the money themselves for it rather than let bbc keep it. I wonder could Spotify or someone be about to snap them up?
They won't have the same pull for guests elsewhere though. They'll still have great pull but I wonder will they just miss out on the odd top guest.
I'd be a MTL to the podcast, usually building up a backlog of them and binging on a few months worth over the course of a DIY project. Haven't been listening lately but check out the Youtube reviews. Will be very surprised if the show doesn't pop up on another station or as a stand-alone podcast elsewhere.
If they go out on their own I would hope they do a bit more spoilery discussions.
Last show on April 1st? I smell a rat.
I wish but nope
