Being a journalist in a conflict zone is a very hazardous occupation. What's different with this war is RuSSia is actively targeting journalists. Why because they are showing the reality of the crimes their military are committing.
Ultimately the "Special Financial Operation" with RuSSia needs to expand its scope from getting the invader out of Ukraine to regime change within RuSSia as well.

If politically possible, I'd see if non NATO forces with reasonable military capabilities, like Australia, Singapore and Finland, would be willing to contribute to the multi-national peace keeping force. Australia now has a reasonable number of F-35's, has F-18 growlers and the Wedgetail AWACS. If the stealth hype is to be believed, and accounting for the over-hyping of Russian capabilities, these significantly capable assets combined, should be able to deal with any planes Russia commits.
Just publicly signalling the intent and starting the assembly of the forces might be enough to get Putin to consider negotiations.
No targets inside Russia would be attacked and the intent not to attack or invade Russia would be made clear. And while we are at it, the Russian seperatists in Moldova would be expunged.
Air assets would operate out of Romania protected with THADD, Patriot and perhaps Israel's David Sling system. Basically a selection of what's available that is likely to stop anything thrown that way.

But, I disagree. First of all they ARE supplying military equipment/intelligence that is denting (at minimum) Russia's ability to wage war and Russian troop morale.
You are correct if you are saying the US/NATO won't be the first to directly attack Russia. This is the MAD logic that has kept relative peace since WW2.
Further, the US/NATO is not afraid of a conventional war with Russia. They are afraid of an escalation that would cause the deaths of 8 billion people.

That's not how fallout works. The most radioactive fallout decays rapidly, so after a couple of weeks the fallout will be causing elevated background radiation, but not bad enough to cause acute radiation sickness
If Putin has a bunker that he can live in for a few months he'll survive to survey the rubble and witness the nuclear winter (he'll probably have plenty of canned food to feed himself and his his mates for a few years)

Journalists have been killed in lots of conflict zones. We can't comment on this one yet, but the Russians would certainly like less scrutiny of their war. Sending a 'message' to journalists like this might be just the thing to make them stop coming into the contested areas and stay in Lviv or Kyiv.
It's hardly the sinking of the Lusitania, but will mean more equipment sent to Uktaine.

I suspect the endgame will be in the form of peace talks, a ceasefire, followed by a Russian withdrawal to their fortified regions, Putin claiming a victory. Kiev may survive, Zelenskyy may survive.
Russia will sink further into the abyss of an economic basket case. A bit like Germany in the 1930s. Putin will probably try to deflect and harness the Russian people's anger towards the West.

It just confirms what we have seen already RuSSians actively targeting journalists. They need to be careful these kind of incidents will push the US towards more direct action. Public opinion in the US is firmly behind more decisive action, if that increases the Biden admin will not be able to ignore it.

Indeed, from a fallout pov the bigger problems after the first weeks will be food and water supplies as the soil and open water would be contaminated. But even then you are probably looking at longer term cancer risks rather than short term and there will be rural areas less contaminated due to their distance from detonation spots and weather conditions. Getting enough food with a changed climate to live that long though, would be a bigger struggle.
