I think many Western Analysts assumed the RuSSian military would have been on par with professional Western military forces. No one including me expected the complete and utter shitshow that was presented as a modern front line force.
As I said previously in this thread what the last two weeks have demonstrated is the RuSSians are the biggest military bullshitters in the world.

Pro-Russian support was definitely hugely overstated. They seem quite shocked that Ukraine is putting up such a spirited resistance and that everyone has rallied around the Ukrainian flag, this wasn't part of the script at all. A recurring theme in the Russian media is that they thought the country was deeply divided into competing factions and tribes and that there was no real Ukrainian identity.

First 3 seem to be ticked handy enough. Denying Ukraine as a state and basically saying Ukrainians don't exist checks the box for a declaration IMO. Obviously some bearded paedo issuing a Fatwa against Israel or w/e doesn't need to be taken seriously til they have some means or plan to actually do something.
At the very least the annexation of land, destruction of cities and driving millions of people from their homes is some common garden ethnic cleansing though.

I have to laugh at the suggestion that Russia would have the capability to stand up to NATO without nukes. This war would be over in hours if the RuSSians didn't have nukes. NATO could take care of things from the air alone without having to put boots in the ground.
Only the most deluded fool would suggest otherwise based on the RuSSian militaries performance of the last two weeks. The RuSSians are great at killing civilians and bombing hospitals but put them up against a determined and organised military and they show what a paper bear they are.
In reality Putin has no out from this mess. Sanctions won't be lifted until RuSSia withdraws and I don't see that happening whilst the NovoFuhrer is still alive.

I very much doubt Putin had the same notions as his carefully manufactured propaganda, but as a dictator is probably surrounded by yes-men who gave him wildly optimistic predictions that Ukraine would collapse very quickly. Many Western analysts also thought the same. Ukrainians have surprised everyone.

He would be safe in a bunker complex somewhere, Russia is a vast, vast country. During the Soviet era they had a full on prepped underground city ready to go in case of all out nuclear war, it's likely they'll have some version of that today
