Any experience/recommendations for GPS systems?

Has anyone any experience or recommendations for GPS systems. Would you try to get one with an inbuilt screen or one where you can buy a basic android tablet and use it with it? Subscription or non-subscription based?

Would it be possible to "build" one from component parts? As in plug-and-play off the shelf kind of job. I don't mean sitting down with buckets of electrical components and a soldering iron

To be used mainly for spreading fertiliser.

Worth it or not?

Gypsy Technology in Cork seem well priced with a basic and more elaborate model. €800 for basic and €1000 for higher spec. Afaik it’s the most accurate system on the market but would suffice perfectly for fertiliser. I have no direct experience with them but anyone that has it seems happy

I've done some searching and found some apps which are relatively cheap to purchase. You can connect them to consumer GPS receiver which give better precision than a phone GPS.

I reckon that I could get it up and running for under 300 quid. That is buying the GPS receiver, the app, and a new android tablet.

Don't have them yet but Garmin GLO 2 is one I saw. There seem to be a few apps that have free versions on google store. The most popular one appears to be one called field navigator. Again, I can't vouch for it

No. I think there are two technologies. If you want to go with the RTK ones you might need a base station. Those can get you down to 1cm of accuracy it seems. The GPS one says 3m accuracy but the apps say that using that GPS gets to 1 foot accuracy. Don't ask me how they can claim that

You can add the fields into it manually as well I think. I can't remember exactly how to do it but I did it that way when I looked at it.

Ah, I misunderstood. No, I'm not sure about that. I thought you just meant the area in each field!

Best place to look for field areas (if you haven't filled in ditches) is to google for arcgis historical map viewer and look at the old 25 inch map

Patchwork one here Eco model I think, some job and not overly expensive from Fossland. wouldn’t dream of spreading or spraying without one after using it for few years. (Might be for sale now actually due to change in systems)
