If Mariupol civilians had been allowed to go west, the Russians would then still be able to launch a new offensive to take the city anyway. So what's the point in not letting the civilians go west?
A lot of people have talked about the relatively poor performance of the Russian army. From my understanding up to about 15 years ago the make up of the Russian army was rather different than what we are used to here in the West.
The use of poorly trained conscripts has been well documented (as is currently seen). However what was less well known was that until recently the vast majority of NCOs (vital enlisted personnel - junior leaders essentially) were simply conscripts themselves.
The notion of a professional cadre of full time NCOs (which has generally existed as the backbone of any army - ESPECIALLY in those that utilise conscription) was non existent. In essence the quality of their enlisted personnel (the foundation of any army) was built on quicksand. Low quality or lowly motivated conscripts served as privates, they were lead by Corporals drawn from the same conscript pool (but who were slightly more promising than those they were leading), who in turn were lead by Sergeants who were only conscripts themselves but willing to serve for an extra 18 months. Essentially you had a massive cohort in your army of unmotivated people only passing time until they were released from their obligations. All coherency and a massive amount of institutional memory was lost every time these NCOs left.
I believe some attempt has been made to regularise the situation and to maintain a more professional army, however it would appear that delays (caused by corruption, lack of funds etc.) have put paid to that. Of course into that mix you will also have an ever declining number of your full time veterans of the many many border clashes since the fall of the USSR. But soldiering is a young mans game.
So if it looks like it's a sh*t show where they don't know what their at (and it certainly looks like it is) well maybe theres a good reason for that: they don't.

I'm aware of the hotline that the US and Russian militaries have in order to avoid misunderstandings on the border between NATO and Russia. Why don't US generals use that to convince Russian generals to guarantee corridors out of Mariupol? Such a conservation would be from one general to another - the best alternate-history example I can think of would be, let's say, Rommel talking to Eisenhower and Montgomery if the Stauffenberg plot had been successful.
Russians are providing corridors towards Russia only. Ukrainian civilians want to escape in the opposite direction.
At this point we don't even know if Vladimir Putin still exists. The original Star Wars trilogy was remastered with better CGI work than the production of his supposed tea party with the ladies the other day. The Soviets had a habit of airbrushing individuals out of photographs when they went out of favor, Putin may have received the same treatment, 21st century style.

The Biden administration was spot on correct in predicting this invasion 2 weeks before it happened, (how many other administrations got these things badly wrong?) consequently preparing and persuading the West for the massive sanctions to be imposed almost immediately. Thus putting massive pressure on Russia before they got a few miles across the Ukraine border.
History will judge that response deservedly well.

That said, any and all military hardware and material should flow into Ukraine, I was annoyed by the fighter jet fiasco. Russian threats of 'We will consider you sending X to Ukraine, an act of .. whatever' - should be ignored, The precedents are there. Russia arms proxies and allies. SO does the west. They wont like the west doing it, of course. And that is unfortunate.. for them. I would take such 'condemnations and bloviation' as evidence that such support is hindering to Russia's position. Not nearly as having your territory invaded Ivan... c'est la vie. Put condemnations in a letter and send it to THEWESTCARES@G.RU

No. Just no. We can hear the other side of things when Putin's up at the Hague, but in that event, I don't think he'll be able to advance a hugely convincing case for what he's directed his soldiers to do, here.
