He'd be right 🤨😃
Why do we need a referendum to increase military spend? That's a day-to-day decision for the Government, not a referendum issue.
Increasing military spend and being able to properly monitor and defend our territory - absolutely (and goes to my point above)
Joining NATO - nope! We don't have the resources for that, and why actively make ourselves a potential target.
Naming the road is a small gesture, the English have given nearly 4k nlaws and are now giving their most advanced anti aircraft systems.
If every European country had handed over so much before the war started would there still have been an invasion, probably but it would have been even more brutal for the Russian forces.
The English have put all of Europe and ourselves to Shame, give them the very best and lots of it, not the Shi7 in warehouses for 30 years which has been the norm in Europe and is frankly a sick gesture for the home political market.
They need food, medical supplies, supplies to live.
They need the very best of military hardware to fight for the survival of their country.
Anything else is secondary.
first of all, you already poked the bear just for being a EU member state.
also, I think due to our location, Ireland is pretty much de facto under NATO protection.
Russians in Ireland is a direct existential threat to London and west europe, you can rest assured that the UK is monitoring the whole region for Russian vessels and submarines.
ps:
nobody will invade you for renaming a street.
Do you think we should follow the Russian line of the maternity hospital wasn't in use to avoid "poking the bear"?
Well European countries will take in a lot more refugees. It is easy to hand over weapons you have, peanuts in terms for cost for a country the size of the UK. Looking after the refugees will cost a lot more than that.
Ireland is also a long way from Russia, and they would have to fly over or sail around a lot of NATO countries before reaching Ireland... Yet they haven't managed to take control of a country on their own border after months of building up military hardware ready to go.
Ireland would be a soft target if it had a land border with Russia and wasn't the opposite side of Europe and all but two of the NATO countries.
They can't even occupy the country beside them FFS. 😕
Will you calm down with your irrational nonsense.
Poke the bear, poke mehole.
This is my favourite post of the day... It's funny 'cause it's true and highlights SF's populist* strategy.
*successful, it has to be said.
Just deny planning permission.
They Also have friends in china who just happen to be massively expanding their military capabilities including building 20 aircraft carrier.
So yeah Russia won't be the only threat going forward
Will the name revert back to it's historical name once the war is over?
Probably not
The irrational nonsense is the idea of renaming a street solely as an imagined "F-U" and for social media kudos, but which will have no benefit to anyone in Ukraine
I'm not 100% convinced on joining NATO myself, but - but we're probably already a target, and arguably less so if part of NATO.
No it will become "Glorious Putin Lane".
Did you not hear renaming the street will cause Putin to take over Ireland?
Ah come on ffs. Why would you do that?
Nobody is "crying" about it.
Someone discussing their opinion on a topic that happens to be the opposite of what you believe isn't "crying".
Really immature way to discuss anything.
Yet you think "social media kudos" will lead to a Russia invasion.
UK government freezes assets of oligarchs, including Chelsea FC. Government spokesman says “Abramovich will not get a penny from the sale of this club”. Hopefully will bring more pressure on Putin
No the irrational nonsense is because we do such a thing in concert with other countries the Russians would implement a no fly zone over Ireland or cut off the Atlantic.
That's next level batshít.
Never mind that London is a clearing house for dodgy Russian funds and has been for decades. The weapons though welcome were a political sop to not look too closely upon British collusion in asset stripping the Russian people.
That is exactly what I was thinking earlier - people have become highly manipulative. Worryingly so. We seem to be puppets on a string to the latest social media outcries/influences/gimmicks. In fact people seem to be in heightened state of wanting to join the latest/coolest mob.
Unfortunately that's the way of the world these days in the era of social media and culture war - you're either with us (and vocally so) or against us. There's no room for discussion or differing opinions, or even shades of grey in that environment. If you're not with us, you are a target to be attacked and belittled and labelled with some made up term.
It's exactly why you then get tokenistic notions like renaming a street for kudos. Superficial reactive half-baked nonsense that causes more issues than it solves
After the Navy, Army and Airforce, PR is the fourth branch of the Military. It helps, even if I'd have to quote Paul Daniels.
Where does she live? We could just rename that street to "Whingers St" and job done.
I suppose if the other residents of Orwell Road are in favour of being from Free Ukraine Road, then it's likely it will get changed.
I'm not sure the other residents have been consulted.
I don't see a reason for it that isn't based on some notion of "that'll show him (Putin)"
Pretty much. Dilpomacy is going to be the only thing that will stop this war and reduce casualties and part and parcel of diplomacy is not being kneejerk children going around renaming roads for temporary 'likes' online and off. The French and latterly the Israelis with some Turkish input are trying practical diplomacy and I haven't heard of them changing street signs. It would be nice if we at least strove to continue our long history of peacekeeping, rather than go down the moronic road of Joe Duffy and Liveline 'politics'.
I would imagine something will come out of the meeting today.
Lavrov is Putin's mouthpiece.
But I'd be extremely wary of the Russians agreeing to a withdrawal or anything like that. Presumably on the way out the lob a few bombs back the other way.
