12,500km is pretty low
Where you getting the 6.95c from?
It’s the night rate on Energia’s EV tariff for people with day/night meters. It’s a fantastic rate but the day rate and SC are quite high so you need to be able to use most of your electricity at night like charging a car or load shifting with a battery as part of a PV system.
Energia EV plan night rate
You must not have driven to Strandhill via the N4,Fast charger in Carrick ON Shannon.
Correct, Athlone via Roscommon
That's my current mileage, if you can save a grand on that then someone doing 60,000km can probably afford a holiday abroad every month and still have savings leftover
Yeah that's what I was thinking, if your saving that much at a low mileage all the people who come here and drive 400km a day will save a fortune 😏
400? You mean 1000 non stop 😁
No, 1000 km there and back again without stopping, towing a caravan driving uphill against the wind all the way.
Few issues with your spreadsheet
Switching to Night rate might cost you money on your other appliances so that could be subsidising your car so I always think it fairest to add a % on to the night rate
That said 5L for 100km on a Diesel Tiguain seems wildly optimistic
Quick google suggest the Tiguain is between 7.3 and 8.6 litres per 100km so you are underestimating your diesel costs massively
Rule of thumb I use 2000 Euro a year per 10K km cheaper electric than diesel
On the motorway. With 5 adults in the car. All of whom never need to use a bathroom...ever.
Yea but what if I want to drive from Donegal to Rome ?
An EV isn't worth looking at until it can do that trip without a charge, return.
On a quarter of a battery.
I think that's an over estimation.
I do 30k in the EV each year and saving 4600e than taking my 2L petrol in fuel costs,
Say 2,500L of petrol vs roughly 5000 units of home charging on night rate (6c)
5k euro vs 300e or 1500e per 10k km (diesel should be a bit better).
I think most people would be happy if a car could do a unplanned journey to Strand hill, without wishing or hoping or waiting or planning or deciding which car to bring.
I can do that, and I'm happy with my car 😄
My car also, and strangely enough I am also happy that I don't have to plan or hope or much else. 😁
They "downgraded" me to a Leaf for 10quid a day less. The guy at the rental desk had no clue about electrics. He wanted to charge me for a full tank of petrol. There is no mention anywhere about battery size. Car had only 400km when got it and was displaying 270 km range at 80%SoC. My guess is the 62kWh After I drove 150 km, charged to 75 % was displaying 300 km. One thing is clear. This car doesn't like speed. At 120km/h was loosing range at a ratio 2:1. First charge was at 51kW max but the second 22kW. I didn't really had time to play with the car but couldn't see how to display the charging speed on the dash.
No cars like speed, it's not just EVs.
They all get less efficient the faster they are driven.
Hence the reason all motorists are being advised to drive slower now to save petrol, and why Germany is considering putting a conservative speed limit on the autobahn.
Yeah I found with the Leaf24 there's a massive jump in consumption going from 110 to 120. I'm not sure how the newer one is for aerodynamics but I imagine it's roughly the same
The Leaf is also annoying because it'll start to rapidgate at the fast chargers. Sounds like @innrain is already starting to see that
It's fine for Ireland because you can get to most of the country with 1 rapid charge, but going across Europe would get a bit annoying
Still less annoying than the rental desk charging for petrol in an EV. Nice bit of price gouging going on there 🙄
The old adage of ‘never blame on corruption what you can blame on incompetence’ is more likely at play here. The vast majority of people know less than zero about EVs.
True enough, I'm guessing it's something they try to add on to every rental like the reduced excess
This is true for all EVs. That said, some manufacturers appreciate this and have made their cars extremely aerodynamic, so the reduction of range is far less (Tesla / Hyundai, etc.). Others seem to have ignored it like Nissan with the Leaf, resulting is such bad range reduction that you will see most Leafs driving on motorways at speeds far less than the speed limit. The term LeafSpeed (about 88km/h) has been coined more than once in the EV world 😂
Are there any Genesis Car models on the road here? Do they even sell them in Ireland?
Genesis are Hyundai (same relationship as Lexus/Toyota), none here officially but you can UK import if so inclined
GV60 for the win....... not sure if Paddy gets any.
Saw one on the road midweek. Very nice. Premium quality noticeable even at a glance. Raging now didn't take any pics.
You could import a G80 Sport 3.3 V6 twin turbo. Imagine the range anxiety with that bad boy!
@Busman Paddy Lasty - Good looking motor, I bet the one you saw was on UK plates? Over here it would cost the same to tax as 20 Teslas. And about €10k per year in petrol at €3 per litre (2023 prices) 😁 And that's after you paid the €10k VRT bill for bringing it in 😂
The G80 I took those pics myself. The GV60 was on blue licence plates which is what BEVs get over here in good Korea.
Just watched the above on the Nio ET7. Rumoured to be €57K in Germany and that looks great value to me.
I know they're coming to Norway first but I wonder when we will see any in Ireland.
