Whatever about driving slower to save fuel , everyone should be checking tyre pressure's as well .

Petrol stations charge for air as well now tho 🤐

It was to encourage lower prices to be passed to consumers and keep business going. If it wasn't a gouge the coffee shop owner wouldn't have increased the price of a latte when the VAT rates were restored.

    Past week or so?

I heard on the radio by I think none other than Varadker that it takes 5 weeks for an increase in the price of crude to filter to the pumps.

I’m no expert but someone is wrong.

They had to as in the meantime minimum wage, electricity got more expensive, for some commercial premise rents, materials, even to get coffee from supplier got more expensive... So it wasn't an increase just because of VAT rate change, but also due to other cost increases.

A here now, are you speaking on behalf of some lobby group , I'm not sure we're you've been recently but a denial of the obvious is hard to comprehend or indeed respond too so I won't bother anymore .

Your now suggesting consumers lack the educational skills to understand the Pee be taken out of them 😳 I give up but before I do, I can assure you I am well educated

I wouldn't worry, the supply chain of electronics and battery elements are not there to deliver an influx of electric cars this year, even if a million people showed up with their deposits.

I'm talking about specific examples where signs were posted in coffee shops and other establishments that specifically said prices were increased because of the restoration of the VAT rates. That was a gouge, and I'll be shocked if the same doesn't happen with this excise cut. Government have flagged a 20c per litre reduction in excise on petrol, but the actual reduction should be 24.6c when VAT is included. I'd bet that many filling stations will hang on to that 4.6c per litre in their pricing.

well its certainly affected the traffic - my house faces a busy road and as i type this there's not a car to be heard so 'every cloud....

You think you heard Varadkar say 5 weeks?

Clearly that's not the case as prices are rising rapidly all over the world at the moment.

So you are well educated yet you can't understand that when crude oil goes up and there is massive supply chain disruption due to a war prices at the pumps will follow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,971 ✭✭✭✭bear1

I'm lost, that was essentially panic buying. Why else did you buy all that extra fuel? It's that kind of shite that's not helping prices. Pisses me right off.

I landed back in Warsaw a few hours ago and the price per litre here is an eye opener. Average of 7pln per litre which with the current exchange rate is about 1.5e.

The cheapest petrol station to me had cars backed for ages and people with cannisters filling up. Helps them, but doesn't help the rest.

It's quite funny the ev drivers coming out saying how cheap it is to run their cars, yet energy prices don't just stop at the pumps.

I'd love to hear from someone who uses an ev daily for work, out and about and then charges the car everyday at the current prices.

Getting the 200e credit to your elec bill hardly constitutes cheap motoring.

Calm down there circle k. You'll be ok in the end.

People definitely driving slower in the UK. Trip down the M4 this evening from London to Bristol, sticking at 67/68mph (above which the fuel efficiency drops precipitously for me).

And I was very much with the general speed of the traffic and remarkably few cars overtaking. Very different to normal

More to do with alot of work places having schemes where they allow you to plug in for free.

Not an EV owner personally but they do have far, far lower running costs

And another thing is people driving too close behind other cars on the open road, braking all the time when the car in front does. I always like to leave a bit of a gap so im not tapping the brakes constantly.

Did you mean to say something clever with this post or just wanted to express your bad mannered behaviour?

It's only in Europe that fuel prices are high, rest of world has cheap fuel, it's what makes EU so rich, all the fuel duty and vat.

    Diesel is 2.50l in Sweden

    Untrue

I'm not sure you understand how global markets work.

Today is the first time I have ever seen diesel more expensive than petrol in this country.

Not true. USaisians are complaining about fuel prices and uploading photos on Facebook. Check your facts first.

I wonder what the optimal driving speed is though for fuel efficiency. For example, it might not necessarily be the same in every car - different engine tuning, hybrids, diesel/petrol etc..

Making sure you know how car's heating/ventilation system works and whethe it's more efficient to run it in particular modes to heat the cabin of the car actually has huge impact too.

Are any of the hybrids use their a/c as heat pumps for example?

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have A/C on in Ireland on a cool winter/spring day, you could be burning a lot of fuel for a minor bit of dehumidification.

Unnecessarily running a/c can be a big fuel load - same with heated seats. I've seen plenty of people heating empty passenger seats.

It would seem that being a leading world authority on commodity markets does not necessarily translate to an ability to discern sarcasm.

You've obviously not being following the actual point I was making about gouging, I'm fully aware of how the oil market works, I equally understand what gouging means, I've not once reffered to the price of crude oil 🙄 my point about education or lack of it was in response to an absurd post that same was required to understand what has being going on with regards to gouging , in essence I was refutting utter nonsense. Perhaps you might actually read posts and grasp context before responding or quoting to said previous posts.

Taxing cars by weight (particularly non -commercial), makes a lot of sense.

The electric cars would be taxed off the road if that happened.

A lot of smaller dealer owned sites won’t be able to pass on the cut till they receive next delivery but because of the huge increase of costs from supplier that cut won’t be even noticed. A large high volume site might manage to take a hit but smaller garages would be selling under cost if they did.

It’s not only us customers getting screwed by the likes of circle K but a lot of smaller branded garages are also being screwed by them especially when most suppliers were insisting on multiple deliveries over the last few weeks rather than one large weekly one , only reason for this was so they could raise the cost on each delivery made.
