Oil went from under $100 a barrel to over $120 barrel over the weekend.

This is being partially passed on at the pumps now. Thats how it works.

There is nothing disgraceful about it.

The 15c cut in excise might stop the next 20c hike being as severe.

There is definitely profiteering going on. No doubt about it.

Radio reports that some stations were changing prices during the day. Despite the fact that the fuel they were selling from their tanks was the same fuel in the morning and the evening, so they paid the same price for it, why are they allowed to do that.

The gov don't really care all that much underneath it all. Ursula announced before that she wants the EU to be less reliant on fossil fuels and everything to be turned towards renewables and hydrogen. This high cost right now actually suits their overall agenda despite the hardship it inflicts on the rest of us

A chap I know is a Prof of Astrophysics & Mathematics in DCU. He posted some fuel usage figures last night on Twitter...

2e per liter is nothing. It will likely go up much more before some deal will be made with Russia but even then price will never go down to what it was before and any decrease will be marginal and slow.

We do pay and will pay more for some time to come not only because of the war but because of covid and green madness too.

As for EV this is another ridiculous idea. Every green enthusiast compare EV with oil but they forget to mention that we simply lack nearly everything which is needed to manufacture enough of them. Just have a look about how hard it is to mine and recycle lithium. Not to mention other stuff like cobalt and if you want to have real fun just have a look at what nickel did just this week. Oh well, no wonder as Russia is third largest producer of it.

What is going on now globally is rather like a wake up call from this dream of new green deal half-assed ideas. People start to see damage which is going to be done to their lifestyle and lives.

Sorry, I am not going to be changing car battery every few years.

So nobody gets a new delivery during the day?

They are allowed do it because its a free market.

Plenty of stations out there if people want to shop around.

EV owners don't change their car batteries every few years.

Go educate yourself on the subject.

People need to reduce consumption. Its that simple really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Varik

The local one went from 189 to 194 and today it's up to 198, the rest along route to work were mostly the same for petrol/disel and none were over 2 yet (will likley be different on way back)

They will. Which will have a massive effect on the economy and employment

I'm convinced at this point that being near the border means more expensive fuel. They can't undercut the north to the extent that it'll have people coming down any more. So they seem to keep prices up a bit since there's only competition in one direction.

Exactly. Reduce, reuse and recover. We need to tackle consumption and resulting resources wastage and pollution. All this CO2 and carbon talk is pure nonsense.

What are we going to do with heaps of used car batteries? Oh, I know. We will ship them to china or africa where lads will burn them in a pit and recover some copper from cabling. And we will be happy pretending how great we are saving the planet.

When the eur could buy $1.47. Today it buys $1.10.

And over 13c carbon tax today.

Too many clueless people screaming price gouging and rip off when they haven't the basics to understand what market forces are at work.

Before Christmas we were airfreighting in Antanovs of tat for the christmas market from China and nobody cared about all the oil they wasted as long as the kids had the newest X-Box for 2 weeks until they got bored of it.

Two of the local stations went up since I last passed them at 9am this morning. 15c on diesel in one and 10c in the other.

Just out of curiosity how often would they get a delivery? I only ask because one of the ones I mentioned above only put their prices up yesterday. They hardly get a delivery daily?

Always fill up in Ireland before driving in Europe because traditionally prices of diesel much more on mainland Europe. Surprised people think it's more expensive here.

And Seth Bundle is correct, massive savings in fuel to be made with driving style. I saved hundreds of Euro driving from Normandy to San Sabastien the second time after correcting my driving style.

Speaking from experience this isn’t always possible and these fuel hikes are affecting health care.

ie: Elderly and/or disabled people that require home care help. This is either provided by care staff employed directly by HSE or through an agency. These carers do significant miles each day.

The HSE staff receive an allowance for mileage which covers the cost of travelling to different clients. Granted, as fuel goes up, they’re paying more from their own pocket but I’m sure their unions are negotiating for them. The agency carers (that I’m familiar with) have been given a circle k card allowing them to pay 4c a litre less than the pump price. The agency owners need to buck up their standards tbh

The agency staff are quitting or going on the sick (bad back and the like) because it’s not paying them. Currently there’s no cover because who wants to work for nothing so clients who can’t move without assistance are left.

Garage beside my office went up 20c between yesterday afternoon and this morning after the announcement, it's hard to believe all these examples are just a coincidence of an overnight delivery and huge jump in price.

Im definitely gonna have to see can go back to wfh more often if I can but I'm sure that's just not an option for most people.

My brother called his supplier for Agri diesel today for the farm and he was told the cut will only take 2c off the price of a litre

Turning off the heat half an hour early?

    Driving slower?

    Car pooling?

    Using night save electricity?

More than one way to skin a cat.

Our total costs are very high.

Our insurance is high. Our car cost is high. Our motor tax is high. Our fuel is high.

Many other countries include the road tax in the cost of the fuel.

People are not going to slow down.

Go on the M1 motorway, past the airport, if you are doing the speed limit 80kph, you will driven off the road.

I would put a couple of unmarked speedvans there, and rake in 100k per day in fines.

Its not a coincidence, its because oil went from $100 to $120.

Remember at the start of covid diesel nearly went down to €1?

All these profiteer price gouging rip off operators passed on the reductions back then.
