There are what's called "tactical nukes" low yield. Hypothetically Putin could drop one and it would maybe be like twice a MOAB. Big enough to perhaps illicit a surrender, but not quite big enough to illicit any major retaliation.
I don't think he'd do that. I think we're at the beginning of the end of this war. Diplomatic frenzy behind the scenes seems to be coming to a head.

Obama didn't seem to know that the British government (when Gordon Brown was PM, I think) had decided that it would not take military action abroad ever again without parliamentary approval. Cameron accepted the majority vote against such action. However, May didn't seek such permission when she authorised the RAF to do airstrikes alongside Trump's forces in retaliation for later chemical attacks.

I think we have to remember what happened during Russia's invasion of Georgia. The US told Lavrov directly that they were flying Georgian troops back from Iraq so they could join the fight against the Russians. They also told them they were sending a flotilla of Navy vessels to escort a convoy of supplies to relieve Georgia and Russia was not to interfere with any of these operations. Russia didn't lift a finger.

Again, just to remind of the usual disclaimer here, we are receiving a lot of Ukrainian-centric info, as it can be easier to fall into a trap of believing Ukrainian forces doing better than they really are, likewise that Russian forces doing worse. That said, the picture seems to be Russia are underperforming in relation to their goals, and the Ukrainian military are (so far) giving them a tough fight.
