The thing is, he probably didn't realise that this was the route his little adventure would take. Especially not after years of friendly talk with the west. In fact few people, if any, would have figured on the terribly swift reaction that the west has given re: economic "warfare". Such a round condemnation and sanction effort has never been seen before.
Vladimir Putin believed that he had the west, or at least Europe, by the balls because the energy Russia supplies. And the cosy relationship he'd enjoyed with the US under Trump, more than likely, led him to think that they would have been willing to keep their noses out of a conflict in eastern Europe.
As we have seen, he's been proven very wrong indeed.

I can't believe that two people have seriously answered yes to this question. Either they have no kids or their kids need to take them aside and give them a long hug.
At least in a good number of cases the Ukrainian propaganda has had some sort of supporting evidence; or some sort of logical foundation. They do tend to embellish things for sure.
Pretty much everything that comes through official Russian channels is deeply misleading if not outright fabrication with zero supporting evidence.
Also it was the Red Cross who made the claims about the evacuation corridor being mined: they also didn't say who might have mined it either.

We've learnt from history we cannot stop strongmen by being weak. All the talks with Putin over the last 8 years meant zero. Putin has invaded Ukraine, he has started a new Cold war. That's our new reality.
I've read your posts and I don't think there's much processing power behind them to tbh, but no, it's not hysterical. I asked if the poster was willing to have his loved ones die in a nuclear war over this, and he said he would, so he could stand up to a bully. I just want to spell out what a nuclear war actually means for those who are smooth of brain. You think I'm being hysterical; I'm actually just walking through some of the unsexy real-world ramifications of this guy's beliefs.

Peaceful diplomatic mission?
I've heard about people being harassed by agents attached to that peaceful diplomatic mission in this country for having the audacity to question the Russian regime over the years.
Russian diplomatic staff are by all accounts operating with the same type of impunity within Ireland as they do in other countries.
I don't know, would have agreed with you before all the trouble moving the army into place for war + negotiations with Biden etc. started last year.
This whole catastrophe hasn't made much sense at all to me unless he's come to believe at least some stuff he's been coming out with as justification to launch a war (and saw now as a good time to do it). Or perhaps some of the ideas Wibbs expressed in his posts about Ukraine sliding toward potential EU accession + giving a very "bad" counter-example of how to manage affairs to Russians made him angry and fearful about what it could mean for his own rule into the future.

I have/had read about how wealthy Putin is alright (and sheer size of Russia and the natural resources wealth it has, which he is a sense in control of with a small clique are just mind boggling anyway). How could one man actually want or need any more money!? The huge risky undertaking of launching a war to get it really does not make sense. edit: Anyway will stop waffling, better informed and smarter people than me try and fail to know what is going on in minds of dictators and their circle when they do something outrageous like what Putin has done.

You are willing to permanently destroy the future, and inflict a gruesome death on all the babies, toddlers, the 4 and 5 year olds alive today, and deprive all the billions yet to be born, stretching out over future millenia, of existence; all for standing up to an elderly bully in the here and now. Yeah, that's the IEA 10 point plan, officially published tomorrow. A lot of it aspirational on things like energy efficiency and an increase in alternative sources of gas, which are not really that promising at present.
I find it hard to believe putin fell for his own propaganda but how ironic.
Have seen a few military experts interviewed, several have said that Russia seems to be having a problem with combined arms logistics. Basically moving a large army is exponentially complicated, and the Russians haven't done so since the 1940's. So on paper this might have worked for them, in reality they seem to be struggling with the logistics.
