Given the religious products in that Embassy truck attack, it wasnt that crazy dancing priest that interrupted the F1 etc was it?
You make some reasonable points, but how are we 'appeasing foreigners' by taking in familes that might otherwise die in ditches? That seems like basic humanity. 'Appeasing foreigners' sounds like something out of the National Party's playbook of catchphrases for the simple-minded.
I can imagine somebody in England writing such a letter to The Times about the Irish in 1845.
Ah yes, cause refugees would be totally safe in the country thats bombing them out of their homes.
You sound like Eamon Ryan now saying farmers need to diversify, finally you're catching on!
I guess it's just the right thing to do. The government will no doubt mess up the housing situation, but we should help people who need help anyway.
You should have a medical card, everyone should. A proper universal healthcare system should be a goal.
I'm not sure there are many who want to live in a dystopian Ireland where how you're treated by the state scales with how much tax you pay.
Just to inform you, the refugees would generally be reluctant to go to the countries which are attacking them. I am sure you can probably understand their concerns.
Or Germany for that matter. They accepted 1m Syrian refugees in 2015.....it's time for other EU countries to step up the plate.
Apples and oranges. It's a letter that has come to unintentionally represent something horrific.
A **** zoo and a live warzone are two very different contexts.
Yes, I agree entirely. Of course they should be distributed around the EU. My point was mainly with far away wars, like in Afghanistan, I wouldn't think we should have an obligation to take refugees from places like that far away.
New poster banging on about refugees - yeah I've seen this before, know where it's going
Jesus! Babies, who never had a chance at life are being slaughtered… Homes destroyed…. Families decimated…. People have given some fickle platitudes…. and now all they can think of is that they want to share their country with the poor refugees.
Sky News feed seemed to be interrupted with a random docu on Abortion services in the UK - before going temp offline - did anyone else see this? - im checking intermittently
Citation needed.
We have a housing crisis because we had a ridiculous housing bubble in the early 2000s, then almost nothing build for a decade. The number of asylum seekers we've taken in durng that time is a drop in the ocean, and there's no excuse for not knowing that.
On economic migrants, since when were Irish people opposed to economic migration? I'm pretty sure we all have family or friends who have done it, or did it ourselves. Is it wrong now?
Hilarious considering the UK is on it and without the UK his mafia mates couldn't launder their billions and spend it in Harrods.
You realise those people Putin is directing to Belorus and Russia will be going into camps, right?
Hmm, maybe. I was certainly opposed to the economic migrant situation. The working class always end up getting shafted and it was them who were being affected with low skilled people coming in. With the likes of Afghanistan, if you're part of the 'liberating' force....do you have obligations towards the refugees that result from that? I'd say maybe yes.
Also ironic given the relative lack of restrictions for the Russians
Apparently the Ukraine housing crisis is worse than the Irish one....
Nah, end of the day, it's a letter. Just because it's been co-opted for something else, doesn't mean it's a horrible symbol.
Too much paranoia in the thread 😆
Don't let him get in your heads, that's exactly what he wants
Out of the door with posts deleted - yes it was a re-reg troll
All EU counties are on the list so it’s nothing to do with a communion van as much as some people seem to want it to be
I continue to watch the situation with all the enthusiasm of a man on the way to the guillotine.
The cheering on of Ukraine to its destruction is horrifying. I am a western supremacist, but it sickens me how many in the west are willing to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian. It goes without saying that Russia's actions are barbaric and worthy of the gallows.
Meanwhile, the Russian sanctions are unsustainable. Putin is a ghoul, but he and his acolytes aren't going anywhere. The sanctions will make a terrible situation much, much worse in terms of raising Russian extremism to even greater heights, causing global food shortages, a formal Sino-Russian military pact, and ultimately, I am quite sure, Armageddon. Russia is not going to fold. It is going to smash Ukraine to pieces, and it won't let it join NATO or the EU without issuing a nuclear ultimatum, and when it does this, I don't think it'll be a bluff.
It's the end of the world as we know it. We think it is going to fizzle out. It is not. If Russia advance into Lithuania or God forbid Poland that is it. Forget about nuclear war the refugee crisis will collapse the EU and the global economy with it. It feels like we are about to enter the dark ages.
It's more than a little curious isn't it?
That said, the forecast refugee numbers are going to pose a major challenge for the State to manage (though it should be noted that in terms of EU states, Ireland will not bare the brunt of this) and this should be acknowledged and not shied away from. This conflict will result in displaced populations for a significant amount of time (we are talking years, and hotels are not going to cut it beyond a month or two) so it's important to address the issues honestly and openly.
At the moment, there is a lot of good will towards those fleeing (simply because people believe that these are genuine and not economic migrants under another guise), but that good will can be easily squandered and dept of justice have plenty of form here. Questions will be asked for example if the State engages in a huge building programme to create accommodation (something that is quite likely to be necessary tbh) when it steadfastly refused to to this to relieve the housing crisis.
Russia can't advance anywhere. They're bogged down in Ukraine. They'd need to conscript men of fighting age. Can't see that going for them given the state of some of their conscripts. It's done. We just have to avoid escalating to nuclear, that's it.
Good jaysus, talk about panic merchants and Eeyores. The Chinese have no love for Russia. They're totally reliant on cashflow from the Western nations who voted against Russia. At best they'll bleed Russia even more because they'll be among the only buyers in town for their stuff. Firesale time. The Russian advance into Ukraine is bogged down, they're losing more men in a week than the British lost in two decades in Afghanistan by official Russian figures, by Ukrainian figures more than the Americans did in the same war. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle They haven't a hope in hell mounting an attack on Poland or Lithuania. 'End of the world as we know it/Enter the dark ages" Sufferin' jesus. 🤦♂️
Yeah, was watching the 5pm headlines myself when that popped up, very strange?
The communion wafer truck was like something from Fr Ted
