Should I buy a PHEV?

sorry to scare ya :)

was looking at a petrol 1.2 Peugeot 3008 gt line €43k on the rd

but then they have a plug in hybrid €45k on the rd , allure spec , 225bhp , automatic

i commute from finglas to swords everyday so 30km round commute , i'm wondering is plug in hybrid the way to go as i could use it in electric mode most days and not use the fuel thus saving money and making more economical sense , currently spending €2500 a year on diesel , would a plug in be more viable and sensible than owning a petrol or diesel ??

sidenote : the Hyundai Tuscon plug in hybrid looks amazing , has a nice big console in the middle , but yet the 1.6 diesel doesnt , so even that is moving towards a tuscon executive plus plug in hybrid

I think once you go automatic you never go back - well that is the feedback from my family anyway! The buzz of driving on electricity - is that normal? I feel like I’m loving it TOO much. I have been paying out so much in diesel monthly that I just can’t believe the difference. 94cent to charge the battery 58%! Sure I’ll rarely use further than the 60-70km Electric range!

I've hopped between both auto and manual but nothing beats an auto especially around town, I certainly won't be going back to ice, the warmer few days has dramatically improved the battery range on the superb, I've done 500Km since filling with petrol and there's 9 tenths of a tank left.

I just reread one of your messages, I have the executive not the exec plus. So that’ answers the tailgate light issue! To be honest I wish I had of gone exec plus but sure look, all going to plan we will be going full EV in a couplE of years.

taking our first spin today that will far surpass the battery range, thinking of going eco and hybrid mode for best battery/fuel efficiency? Will report back, but loving driving this car so far!

gonna call hyundai about free wall charger tommorow and find out energia's unit rate to compare if worth while

if not im just gonna but a box and let an electrician install it , sick of trying to find places and then waiting in the car for best part of 2 hrs

You're at nothing without home charging, public charging a phev is a pita, expensive too. I left energia as they had become very expensive, make sure you get the unit rate including Vat don't take of the percentage discount bollox they'll try and spin you. I can't see a chargepoint being free I'd say the unit rate must be savage to pay for it, could be a 2 year contract too.

gumbo gave me a site in uk that sells a wall box , prob €500 all in by time i get the electrician to i stall it

can i still claim seai grant for this providing he certs it ?

been charging for free in lidl swords so have only put €20 petrol in the last 3 weeks and €3.80 to charge once in tesco , so at the min its paying dividends to go hybrid and use ev range everyday

Apply for the grant first, get approval for the grant back, then qualified electrician, then send off the paperwork, wait,,,,,, then 600 euro, make sure your cost is over 600 euro.

I would honestly set up the granny charger, leave it charge over night, full battery in the morning without the waiting.

It adds up over time, some like to make fun of the 20 or 30 mile range, do it 6 days a week for a year its 15000 km for sweet F.A. , charge when out and about when it suits, petrol consumption is only noticeable on the longer trips, consider it as ionity in liquid form, expensive but convenient and time saving.

My mothers charge point cost was 750euro, 600 for the electrician, 150 for the charger, she got the grant so only 150 euro, she did get 2 lights wired up at the same time, even if it does cost you 1200 euro, your probably not going back to petrol or diesel, you will make full use of it in the years to come.

If you

travel high frequency, low distance routes, explicitly within the EV only range
have access to a charger at home (or even better, also at work)
Have a legitimate reason that you cannot rely on the charging network
are buying 2nd hand and can't afford a comparative EV

then consider buying a PHEV, otherwise I'd go for full EV

The way you phrase this you make it sound like people need permission from some higher authority to buy a PHEV.. I think people will make up there own minds and decide themselves whether they wish to rely on the public charging network. I will take it the use of the word 'legitimate' was not meant to cause offence.

I would also add that those of us you have recently bought new PHEVs could have bought the equivalent BEV but chose not to - not that we couldn't afford them.

my specific legitimate reason for buying a PHEV. 2 very elderly parents both living alone and both 200+km away in opposite directions. Knowing that we can get to them immediately, in an emergengy, without having to charge.

Another generic reason I was thinking of, but no longer applies to me, but once did, 4 children under the age of 5 - no way in hell am I stopping to charge a couple of times with them in the car :-)

The fact you seem to consider phev drivers as the poor relations is the bit that galls me, there was an id3 in the garage I bought the superb for exactly the same money, spec obviously wasn't as good on the id3 and I didn't have the confidence to make the full ev jump at that time. Will be going full ev next time.

I have an PHEV in the driveway. I shared the though process that I used to decide whether to buy an EV or a PHEV. I then bought a PHEV.

How you interpret that as galling is on you, I genuinely don't know how to respond.
