Well in the 90’ we had everybody in shannon, the KGB because of Aeroflot using Shannon, FBI because of the Russians presence and MI6 because of the northern Irish presence. :-D
There's often a conflation of all types of immigration. Most people do not oppose genuine war refugees. What we've seen over the years are mainly young men from the Middle East coming over as 'refugees', but they're in fact economic migrants.
Economic migrants from developing nations often do squeeze out indigenous low income earners. By the way, this was the position of the hard left up until 5 minutes ago. They were all for the 'workers'. Bernie Sanders was utterly opposed to low skilled immigration as was Corbyn.
Anyway suffice to say Ukrainians are genuine war refugees and each country needs to do their bit.
I’ve been in work since 7:30am. What is the latest lowdown on the situation? I noticed something briefly about Putin demanding 3 regions of Ukraine as I passed a newsstand
I don't think anyone is claiming that. However there is an embassy in Moscow which could provide some assistance to Irish nationals living in Russia (or even Ukraine!). If a Western country allows it's Russian Embassy to be attacked, don't be too surprised if the "Russian people" (I mean agents of the government) do similar over in Moscow. Why would the Russians have any reason to respect the diplomatic status of those people if they can claim that their people's statuses are not being respected.
Let's not lose the run of ourselves with "Attacking an Embassy".
My mother has done more damage reversing her Punto in the back yard.
Jaysus thanks to this thread I've gone from 0 on my ignore list to 12!!
And before this thread I hadn't put anyone on my ignore list since I joined boards!
I know the Russians are being fed all types of propaganda shyte, but there is no way in hell they are so gullible to believe that we have real tanks.
If I was asked to repair it I would demand cash up front, as in dollars or euro.
None of that monopoly money and no IOUs.
There are probably a lot of people who fear that the lazy uneducated immigrants who can't speak English will steal their jobs.
Doesn't say much for them though does it?
Frankie Boyle had a great line in one of his shows about the dual racism Irish immigrants got when coming to Glasgow. They were both assumed to be stupid and accused of stealing jobs. As Frankie says it was people basically saying - "we'd better stop importing all these idiots or else I'm gonna be out of a job".
Starting to enjoy reading the bizarro fantasies on this thread about Ireland being some sort of prime target for Vlad. Appears a lot of people are on some sort of thrilling emotional rollercoaster with this whole thing.
Didn't take long for someone to moan about refugees being treated like they're people who need help. I expect it to get worse. Before long they'll be talking about how the new refugees are leaving prams at the bus stop. Same bullshit, different day.
Don't knock the Lada Niva, they are way better off road than a lot of the modern tat that claims to be offroaders in this part of the world.
Very mechanically simple as well.
They can go down the route of the forced tillage cultivation of WWII where eventually anyone with over 5 acres had to dedicate 3/8 of their land to tillage and crops if their land wasn't mountain, bog, etc.
They had inspectors going around to enforce the rules.
A lot of our land is not suitable to modern tillage, but a lot more land could be definitely used.
Actually this war could prove to be environmentally beneficial where people start growing local produce and cutting imports and all that involves.
Not that I am endorsing any dross from the greens or the fookers that want to screw Irish agriculture.
Also finally people might cop on that the great globalisation experiment is leaving us in the Western World wide open to getting royally screwed by foreign despotic regimes.
Russia-related article in terms of energy. IEA strategy for weaning the EU off Russian gas supplies. They believe it can be done quite quickly.
This time tomorrow I'll have the equivalent of that in my pocket in loose change.
Western commentary seems genuinely surprised at the less-than-state-of-the-art Russian equipment used to wage this war, and yet I'm still fearful that we haven't seen the full ferocity of the Russian arsenal yet. Perhaps, Putin is afraid that the optics will be so bad that he might actually cross Beijing's red line (if they have one that is)?
We already watched the Chinese take Hong Kong, we'll watch them take Taiwan too.
I'm not sure if I'm on the right site( this is donedeal isn't it?)
Anyway, set of wrought iron gates for sale, can deliver. €200 or 1 million rubles.
Also all sorts of gate/ fence repairs carried out.
It should have been done after the HSE hack, it's gas how we play nice with Russia and then at every chance they get the knife in.
The banning of all Russians is equally perplexing.
Who's banning all Russians? This is a Putin war, and that of his sidekicks, not one launched by the Russian populace.
Its a letter. Guess you're not a fan of going to the zoo.
Civilised nations and cultures respect embassies and their role both in diplomacy and in quid pro quo protection of our citizens abroad and only in the very worst conditions have they been closed down and diplomats expelled and more often than not that happened under petty tinpot dictatorships. Which we are not and shouldn't apsire to be with knewjerk hotheaded emotionals. It's got nothing to do with inflated self importance either. Even though on the UN peacekeeping front we've been one of the biggest contributors in Western Europe and our flag doesn't have the stain of many imperialistic nations so we're more likely to be welcomed into delicate situations. Never mind the voting power of our disapora in the US. There's a reason why every US president has tried to dig up a great granny who once owned an Irish setter. Even the first African American president played that well worn fiddle.
And you miss the point entirely about putin and his minions. They're worried because the West is strong. Much stronger than Russia on pretty much every metric. The largest country on the planet with the GDP of Italy and that comparison will look ever worse and worse by the day as the power of Western sanctions and indeed weapons on the ground in Ukraine bite ever harder. The only toys in their arsenal are nuclear weapons and the threat of them. They know damned well without that stick to wave the West would pound them into the soil of Ukraine within a week. The only reason he's risked a major overreach in Ukraine is because of that stick and overreached he has. His economy is going down the toilet, his foreign reserves frozen, his currency practically worthless, his friends and minions are haiving their foregin assets seized, the bulk of Western corporations(who have huge power) have withdrawn, export/import shipping is decimated and politically their name is mud around the world and their armed forces have lost more men than in a week than the US lost in Afghanistan in decades. And that's going by the official Russian figures. Ukraine is hurting and badly, but Russia is losing very very badly. It will take a long time for them to come back from this misadventure. A very long time.
More likely: 'Learner driver damages gate of Russian embassy in Dublin while attempting simple 3 point turn.'
I think us bowing to this tactic and allowing our "western" values be demolished at gun point is more of a risk than anything else it's Russia in Ukraine today, Tomorrow it LL be China in Taiwan.
They stole it off a Power Rangers villain.
It seems likely they were effectively bankrupt as of yesterday, so the prediction was astonishingly accurate. Something as big as this has a certain momentum, so things won't come to a screeching halt. You are more likely to see things like Russia suggesting talks with conditions that are ever so slightly less laughable than the ones 3 days ago.
Aye but those gates are going to cost them trillions of rubles to fix.
FFS the Special Delivery Operation at the Russian embassy won't put us on the target radar. We are already on it as a major Datacentre Hub and a logistics point for the Americans via Shannon Airport (Sure the Russians have a consulate in Limerick to keep an eye on the comings and goings down there). I believe someone said earlier in this thread during the cold war there were 3 war heads aimed at us.
Well, when it is going to cost 100 billion rubles to repair...
It just shows how pervasive social media can be when a simple tactical military symbol can become much more than its intended purpose.
