Irelands agriculture pre conquest was largely based on livestock especially cattle. Crops grown tended to be small acerages and were mainly oats and barley as these were more suited to our soils and climate. Around the time of the Napoleonic wars there was a big increase in grain production. When the price of grain fell in subsequent years many landlords returned to livestock farming with tenant farmers being increasingly forced to rely on potatoes with a pig or similar to pay the rent. That obviously went pear shaped around the time potato blight hit Ireland and the main foodstuff was virtually wiped out in a couple of months.
Currently we have mainly a mix of farming types with Ireland ranked as the most food secure nation in the world.

And whilst a diet solely based on foodstuffs produced here might be somewhat limited - no one will starve.
Ukraine's air force and air defense is far from destroyed. I don't know why people keep saying otherwise.

That's a very generous to the Russians . Look at a map and you will see that they have very little conquered.
I imagine he thinks it will end like this: hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians killed, millions of refugees if they can escape, cities flattened, cultural artefacts ruined, and all for what? A few monuments in some other country dedicated to their bravery while Russia takes over anyway?
Yes it's heroic and brave but is it worth it? Look at Syria, the unspeakable suffering, and what did it achieve? Nothing. Assad is still there, his grip on power possibly even stronger than before.
Putin has spent the last 5 years supporting but also learning from Assad and I for one can't see the benefits of Ukraine turning into a European Syria, which is the way it's quickly going.
If Ukraine had real military support it could do this, but right now it has no hope and is just sinking into the abyss.
Trouble is the wheat grown tends to be not suitable for use in bread products. We import nearly all that type of wheat. The wheat we do grown goes mainlyv for other. As you said the fertiliser issue could cause issues with turning more land to arable.

Christ, I'd say that takes courage. I presume he doesn't get a golden handshake and happy retirement. It's a propaganda nightmare for Russia. Hope he gets out OK.
What the f*ck is that supposed to mean? What is the threat alluding to?
The whole world doesn't need to get along for nuclear disarmament to occur.
What does need to happen is that enough pressure is put on governments by their people that nuclear disarmament becomes something that has to be strategized in a forum such as the UN.
There is no situation in which all nuclear weapons could be decommissioned all at once, that's not remotely possible but the reductions that occurred previously should be accelerated to a point where countries such as Russia and America go from close to 7000 nuclear weapons each down to double figures only within a tight time frame. Hopefully reducing to zero over time.
The way these weapons are designed is horrific. ICBM's with one nuclear warhead will typically deploy up to five additional decoy warheads to ensure that the weapons reach their targets and cause maximum damage without being intercepted, Russia supposedly has warheads ready to fire at American food production regions that are calibrated to irradiate the soil for generations ensuring any survivors will starve to death.
Getting the number of nukes down to zero is not an easy proposition but it's the most worthwhile endeavor imaginable in light of recent events where one unhinged human being could potentially destroy our entire species.
This isn't an issue we should be dealing with at this point in our history, and if we do get out of this situation we owe it to future generations to make sure they aren't facing the same dilemmas in years to come.
Ukraine army receiving military supplies unashamedly from regions outside the conflict area. Weapons wipe out Russian-born soldiers fighting for their country ( right or wrongly). Russia could argue for war any time, with an increased posture of their armed forces elsewhere in the world?.
Russia and Putin know it is a big deal to attack the west the Baltic states and eastern states who joined Nato. It may go nuclear quickly. Uneasiness here is a mistake or weighed one that someone rogue within the military may fire a cruise missile or standard missile at base or airport right at a country bordering Ukraine. The country is in Nato, a shooting war may start. In war time, this event could happen to trigger a wider conflict. We must acknowledge the reality the west is at war with Russia now how it all end is anybody’s guess.
Its a threat pure and simple - I read it as desperation; Nothing more - it disgusts me to my core - They disgrace themselves more and more, every day
Cos RT say so most likely tbh.
Means nothing until or unless russia does something to back it up. There’s been an awful lot of tough talk from the Russian authorities and to be frank it’s all hot air unless they do something to back it up.
Im not hoping they do anything , not am I implying they wouldn’t do anything drastic either. But where last week the hinting use of nuclear weapons was concerning, it looks like more desperation from a failing government that only has only one trick it can use and unless it intends on using it, it’s a toothless dog with a scary bark
Russia could prevent an escalation in the conflict by getting the f*ck out of Ukraine. They're not wanted there. How 'bou' dah?

Given the stories of soldiers giving up and not wanting to be there, a "rogue" is more likely to lock the system and run off with the keys!
Been away for a few days so just catching up. That prick of an ambassador Yuri Filatov needs to be dragged out of the embassy and escorted to Dublin airport for his detestable lies alone.
I don't care where he goes, just get him off this island.
An abhorrent human.
I dont think it can be compared to Syria, for several reasons,
I honestly cant see this one playing out the same as Syria. I hope Im right.
God help them if they come after the likes of us poor gobshites, on this Irish pseudoanoymous discussion forum. Russophobia is such a nebulous term. 🙄
I despise the Russian Government because it is using bullying tactics to achieve its erroneous quest to dismantle a sovereign nation. However, I pity the average Russian. They have no hand or part in this. They are victims of the regime also. My nephew is seven. He told me today that a boy in his class is Russian. I told him that I hope that he and the other people in this class are nice to the little boy. We are all human. We all deserve kindness.
Its not anti Russian anyway - i have nothing against the average Russian and i am growing more and more concerned for them
This is Anti-Putin - and justifiably so - Never forget
That's all a bit pointless when a lot of weapons are coming in ready made from outside!
And there will still be the Micks and the Clares and the others saying, oh, oh , oh, we kind of condemn the Russians, but well, let’s just sit on our hands and not escalate. This is all NATOs fault.
I hope that the footnote in the history books with their names scorns them greatly
Indeed, and seeing a lot of warnings now about potential false flags from Russia.
No. I wouldn't be sympathetic to the US if it invaded a Russian-alligned country on its border. Based on previous behaviour, i would absolutely expect The US to invade any neighbours who aligned with Russia though. See history of the US invading and toppling governments through the 70s and 80s and see the Bay Of Pigs invasion in Cuba in early 1960s.
Given past behaviour, what would you think the US would do if a neighbour (or even a central or South American country) aligned with Russia or China? I think they'd do a regime change and install a government of their choosing (see Venezuela for a recent example of replacing a governmentthey didnt like). But what do you think they would do?
I think the reason that cant happen is because Ireland needs its embassy in Russia.
This was only ever going to end one way….
