Reports coming out of Russia saying supermarkets are putting limits on item's that can purchased at a time .
The amount of companies pulling out of Russia is insane
That's a huge one - means all VISA and Mastercards issued worldwide will not work in Russia and more importantly, those issued in Russia will not work outside the country.
The last time Russia lost that many in a day or week was back in Afghanistan ,
I'd hate to the messenger who has to inform Vladi of the losses at end of every day
The US State Department has updated it's guidance for it's citizens. It's asking them to leave Russia immediately.
Do not travel to Russia due to the unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces in Ukraine, the potential for harassment against U.S. citizens by Russian government security officials, the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia, COVID-19 and related entry restrictions, terrorism, limited flights into and out of Russia, and the arbitrary enforcement of local law. U.S. citizens should depart Russia immediately.
U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Russia should depart immediately. Limited commercial flight options are still available. Overland routes by car and bus are also still open. If you wish to depart Russia, you should make arrangements on your own as soon as possible. If you plan to stay in Russia, understand the U.S. Embassy has severe limitations on its ability to assist U.S. citizens, and conditions, including transportation options, may change suddenly. U.S. citizens who are able to depart Russia for another country and are in need of emergency assistance upon arrival may contact a U.S. embassy or consulate in that country.
U.S. citizens should note that some credit and debit cards may be declined as a result of sanctions imposed on Russian banks. Also, there are some reports of cash shortages within Russia. U.S. citizens should make an alternative plan for access to money and finances if remaining in Russia.
Due to Russia’s further invasion of Ukraine, an increasing number of airlines are cancelling flights into and out of Russia, and numerous countries have closed their airspace to Russian airlines. In addition, airspace around southern Russia is restricted, and a number of airports in the area have closed. U.S. citizens located in, or considering travel to, the districts of the Russian Federation immediately bordering Ukraine should be aware that the situation along the border is dangerous and unpredictable.
I'd say a good chunk of this is to do with the rapidly deteriorating economic situation driven by the sanctions and the ever tightening access to basic financial services.
Today was not a good day to be flying with a red star.
Ireland should take as many Ukranian refugees as we can. We also have to be strategic. If worst case scenarios come to pass re: food prices and shortages in the ME and Africa, there will be waves of refugees coming to Europe suprassing the wave now coming out of Ukraine.
Unless food, energy and fertilizer prices fall and the supply chain gets fixed, the population of the EU, including Ireland, could grow considerably over the next 2-3 years. Europe's working age population is on the decline and expected to get smaller despite current immigration levels, so there is an argument to be made that a refugee influx is what Europe needs to keep going. The stats are here. They are sobering.
What that worse case scenario would mean for current social programs and to what extent EU members may have to lower standard of living expectations over the coming years is anybody's guess. Let's hope it doesn't come to all that and that there is a cessation of hostilities soon.
No I did not watch it. But watched it now. Doesn't change my opinion. Russia should be treated like a pariah state until they behave. Ukrainians are been killed over a million have fled their own country so far all because of Russia.
The essential point merely one of awareness. There is nothing new happening here and people have been warning about Putin for 20 years now. It's all well and good to say we can't talk about such things, but when you have situations where states are wagging fingers over this where previously they were saying everything's fine and cosying up to the likes of Putin, it's bound to draw questions.
Time and time again this happens and writing it off as simple "whataboutery" is wrong.
People like Putin and a whole host of other characters like him are allowed to fester because various other actors on the world stage allow it to happen because these nasty articles have something to offer in the immediate term.
There may be some who will be cynical about this and say "why should we care" and perhaps they're happy to let the world burn. But not everyone who makes historical comparisons are of that particular persuasion.
The thing is Brainy, you say "Hopefully the West can keep a united front on this and face down the Russian threat". But what will, more than likely, happen is that when all of this has blown over, it'll be back to business as usual...and that's bloody problem that people are talking about.
I posted last week about the similarity of this to the famed Republican Guard convoy back in the gulf war, another media led hyper drama which never materialised
And put a roof over the fields then is it?
There's a thread on Twitter explaining what is thought to have happened to it.
Your free to research it yourself ,
Probably another thread at this point
They don't have anything else!
This is what happens when you siphon off the country's wealth to invest in property, yachts, and football clubs
I think we are all pretty much aware of the hardship that is coming if this madness continues. But we are also aware that we will ,if we wish, watch match of the day tonight or go for a few pints or a nice walk with the dog. We will sleep peacefully in a warm bed all going well. Meanwhile the misfortune people of Ukraine have to flee their homes and homeland in terror from this tyrant putin. Whatever economic pain that's coming our way will never get near their suffering. Finally, surely there must be, there has to be, a group within Russia that are capable of taking out this monster. I don't give a f**k what censorship or oppression is in place there needs to be a response from within Russia. God bless Ukraine 🇺🇦
They failed in Afghanistan and had to get out, where else did they fail massively?
It said Moscow was particularly worried that portable anti-aerial Stinger missiles could end up in the hands of terrorists, posing a threat to airlines
Oh really...
Wrong link
Yep.
“Moscow was particularly worried that portable anti-aerial Stinger missiles could end up in the hands of terrorists, posing a threat to airlines”
The absolute fooking cheek of them after MH17.
Very sure ,
Extremely sure based off evidence of the last 30 + years of russian military adventures , bombing a city is easy when nobody is shooting your aircraft down on large numbers or blowing up hundreds of your military vehicles.
Just look at The Warriors of Ukraine , making a mockery of putin and the mighty Russian army
Interestingly the main headline in the Business Post tomorrow is that the government is telling all Irish farmers to plant crops.
Not sure if related.
If putin attacked Nato they would anilate Russian forces in days
How are you so sure?
Crazy if true, and the first admission by Moscow that they realise they're facing a massive defeat.
Imagine appealing to the same body they've been threatening
I said ‘far left’, by which I meant the ‘far left’ and not Margaret Thatcher.
I'm sure nato can see exactly whats going on and don't need to wait for satellites and the weather
Given the seriousness of the current situation where tensions between Russia and the west are bubbling over and there is currently being a war waged (by a major power) on European soil for the first time in nearly 80 years and it's unfolding in a bloody, harrowing way right in front of our very eyes, the idea of comparing to the actions of other countries in the past feels pretty pointless and an unnecessary distraction from the current crisis.
Classic whataboutery, to me, is pretty much saying what about this or what about that with no attempt to parlay that into why it holds significance to events at hand other than we're all being hypocritical, which is a cynical attitude. What is the greater point being made? That because no-one cared about A, why should we care about B? That because the USA invaded Iraq, who are they to talk about Russia invading Ukraine? It seems to me that a lot of people have forgotten the phrase, 'two wrongs don't make a right'.
Hopefully the West can keep a united front on this and face down the Russian threat, and we can afterward resume discussing geopolitical hypocrisies in a world with generally safe atmospheric radiation levels.
Satellites these days don't just rely on optical sensors, they have radar and IR so they could still track the convoy under cloud or at night.
As it stands from what we have seen over the last number of decades from Afghanistan , Chechen wars ,and not Ukraine ,If putin attacked Nato they would anilate Russian forces in days , Russia is good when they are leveling civilian population centers or infrastructure but give them a modern combined military to fight , guarantee its a purely one sided affair,
But nato aren't going to shoot first now matter how many times you call them weak.
