People here are overall very civilised and law abiding. I'd imagine though that there would be plenty of gurriers that you wouldn't want to give an AK to and to let them loose in a foreign country where they could do what they liked with zero repercussions. That is an additional scary concept in the conflict. I'd doubt the conscripts are getting aptitude tested.

I think this will be the event that paves the way for the regionalisation of the world. Over the last 30 years the lines have been blurred but I think this event will be the catalyst for clearer boundaries between regions. The EU has become a much more real tangible construct over the last 2 weeks. Scenes of Ukrainians fighting to be part of the EU will live long in the imagination.
That we need a tough response and that we are wasting our time trying to negotiate and reason.
I hope that the war won’t spread, but I am not convinced that it won’t. When it does, we need to unite and be strong against the propaganda and deliberate play on our weaknesses

There's very little universal condemnation of the Russian people on this thread. There probably is re Russian soldiers in Ukraine. Many may not be there of their own volition, but they are still an invasion force. Hopefully they will be treated fairly when POWs.
There are also very pro Russian posters that flat up lie, so that's going to get a heated reaction.
On the whole I think the pro Ukranian posters are relatively restrained.

I've been following this on and off for nearly a decade, I have no idea what happens next or what the solution is.
If Russia's campaign does grind to a halt, (they can't keep up at this level for long) and with their economy going into a slow meltdown, they could be forced to the table, trading selective sanction lifting for certain stalemates, certain withdrawals, etc.
If they somehow get air superiority, suddenly start making huge gains, murder Zelenskyy, force an evacuation of Kyiv - they still have an almost impossible task of controlling the country. That doesn't seem possible or achievable.
Perhaps they will continue this campaign but focus on using it to encircle LNR and DNR Ukrainian forces, take those territories and hold them, and the water bridge to Crimea, they could "claim victory" and "operational goals met", withdraw from elsewhere. "Job done".

yes and with supply chains broken after covid and energy costs going up anyway, Europe (like the US) needed to focus on basic stuff like reshoring as much manufacturing as possible even before any of this happened. This conflict will accelerate those initiatives.

This morning, Mariupol's deputy mayor and a resident in the city told the BBC that Russia continued to shell the area despite a supposed ceasefire beginning at 07:00 GMT.
But Russia's defence ministry has a very different version of events.

This was around the time maersk said they were cutting all trade bar the above with Russia, which was criticised for being too soft.
You're right, there. NATO cannot shoot down Russian planes over Ukraine (well, not without running the risk of a much wider conflict, anyway), but NATO can hopefully try to ensure that as many of these babies as possible comes across the Polish border -
