I work in the agricultural sector in Ireland- more specifically the arable sector is a large part of my career and business. This (vitally important) sector has been eroded, diminished, skills and infrastructure lost, and basically laughed at as irrelevant both within agriculture and certainly outside it. Seen as a dirty word, killing everything with nasty pesticides etc etc. The only thing is we all have to eat. Eat well and affordably. It’s time Europe woke the fcuk up to that fact and fast
The CCP are spouting the same nonsense as Putin, this is our country, our brothers, our people yet we’re going in with tanks blazing to take it back. Exactly the same thing. I would be very worried as a Taiwanese looking on at what’s happening in Ukraine. American isolationism is not what you want to see.
The Chinese don’t give anyone free lunches
The inner terrorist in me has been wondering why there hasn't been a co-ordinated agreed time to fly shop bought drones carrying thermite mixtures to drop on the roofs of their embassies around the world.
Well they do, and then you repay back in a big way and if you don't repay they just take
Ask realdanbreen 😀
The rouble's value is not just plummeting, it's becoming a toxic currency due to all the controls and sanctions, basically institutions don't want to touch it if they can help it, and that will extend to Asian institutions which still have to interact with the international system. Anything that involves higher risk comes with a higher price tag. Also you don't want to do any kind of bilateral moves with someone who might get cut off from Swift the next day.
Then there are defaults, if Russia defaults on any of it's foreign obligations, that hits their credit rating very hard (which is going to decrease anyway as their economy drops) - any sort of international trade becomes much harder.
We also have up to 1 trillion dollars worth of their crucial foreign assets blocked, I don't think they expected that, it seriously hobbles them in terms of liquidising those assets to help prop up their falling rouble, and even worse, their trading partners knowing they don't have that resource adds even more risk. I'm sure Russians will find various workarounds, but the whole thing is going to be a nightmare for them.
Only faulty ones.
It’s amazing the amount of authoritarian lovers we get from afar arriving to live in liberal western democracies ;)
You are lying why I'm not sure, yet.
There is a big rally tomorrow.
Hmm, that's rather strange. Public need to vent and in a non destructive way. Protests would be expected.
I was reading a twitter thread from a Russian born economics expert and he reckons the sanctions could cripple their economy soon - the air and shipping ban means they will be unable to get their hands on raw materials and spare parts, which could set off calamitous effects across their supply chains and numerous sectors of society.
I said on day one of this that France and the UK had a golden opportunity to send forces into Mali and deal with the Wagner group there. Unfortunately they didn't, so now they are in Ukraine.
Indeed. They'll be more than happy to loan Russia money but will ask for strategic assets as collateral. It would be no surprise to see China with an artic naval base by the time this is over
The 80's had some good ones.
Yeah I don't see how their economy withstands this for any long period. Yes other countries will step in to supply Russia, but the Russians will have to pay through the teeth for it.
Sean Penn legged it about 3 days ago and had a very long walk to the Polish border, towing his suitcase, due to the road being blocked with abandoned cars for tens of km.
He was there making a documentary on the war - well a bit of it. Hats off to him, though.
Wonder why they're called that. Are they fans of the somewhat right-leaning German composer. Or do they see themselves in the role of No. 2 to Putin's Dr Evil?
What application? We have searched everywhere and can find no application, sorry.
Every single penny of the 1 trillion of Russian assets frozen should be directed to rebuilding Ukraine or supplying its insurgency.
Pussyhands threadbanned
Could you imagine the reaction if just one incident like this occurred in a NATO force.
Yup. And I’m afraid the irony is completely lost on them, as well. I feel like it’s a kind of brainwashing, so it is futile to discuss politics with them really. I just talk of other things.
That's going to be used as collateral for all the fertiliser / grain they are holding back
it's kind of nard to find Putin's latest speech on youtube, here it is anyway if it hasn't been posted already.
it's a rambling mess, he seems to go off on random tangents at times, making up stuff on the spot. something up with his right hand too, he's clearly holding it to stop it shaking. make of that that what you will.

I hate the idea of pointless death. Honestly.
THAT SAID - Russian incompetence is a useful Ukrainian Ally - Slava Ukraini
I'm curious how this will play out.
If/when Russia take over Ukraine, or split it (some ceasefire and a truce) or the Ukraine Government becomes a government in exile etc... Russia will still be sanctioned, Russia will have to negotiate with the West. They may have the upper hand in negotiations with Ukraine, but the west have the upperhand sanctions wise. This is going to be a long haul.
Poor old pussyhands...
Putin style censorship at its best
