I think the problem for Russia is that, given its current alliances with countries like Iran, it would be the natural tendency of the country to slip into an anti-Western mode. You may get a reconciliatory figure like Gorbachev for a while, but that lapses and just gives way to another Putin who rises to the top on a wave of anti-Western, make-Russia-great-again spiel.
They are indiscriminately firing cluster bombs into urban areas, so we're a bit past the 'jeez, independent world media or state controlled Russian media, who'dya trust. Just so hard to differentiate'. Your point is not valid.

Nato won't be winning any Nobel Peace Prizes in the near future, but it's purpose isn't to please contrarians who would let Europe be overrun by fascists at the drop of a hat, it's to secure Europe for the future. 99 percent of the time that future is secured by democratic institutions like the EU and multilateralism, but sometimes you need to show fascists and war criminals the stick. My error. For some reason I thought Ireland spent just under 1% of GDP on defense. It's actually 0.3%, or about 1% of the government budget.
From the recent Defense Forces Commission report. It states that the current level of funding is unacceptable for Irish requirements, it should be at least doubled and preferably tripled. That would still make it one of the lowest countries in Europe, as thrice nothing is still nothing. NATO is not defense only, it can be offensive or defensive under their crisis management mandates, they can go on the offensive in support of a UN mandate for example.

The benefit of having nuclear weapons is in not having to use them. Only a siege of Moscow would trigger an all-out strike
Well that's the theory anyway, theories aren't always correct.
And so the Russians I'm sure said they never invade Ukraine when they promised in an agreement to give up their Nucleur Weapons in 1994 and what happens in 2022? Yes Russia Invade a Sovereign country so they broke their promises. A defensive pact like Nato is still relevant when there is a humanitarian crisis just like all the people slaughtered in Srebrenica in 1995. Nato had to get involved after that in that war to stop a monster. What is the difference here with Putin and what he's doing? He's murdering innocent civilians. Enough is enough and that doesn't excuse the fact for Nato for them not to get involved because Ukraine are not a nato pact country. They way they are going I wouldn't trust them to even defend a small Nato aligned country either. They might deem it not important enough when the threat or nuclear weapons is waved about by Putin.
