I think there is a joint defence pact being a part of Europe and Europe has an army and weapons etc.. I’d imagine that’s why this application wasn’t already fast tracked through.

The only reason Putin objects to Ukraine joining NATO is that it would be almost impossible to invade after it joins. With ICBMs and subs there is no justification for ‘keeping nukes off our border’.
I think that is what boils my blood about how the hard left are pussyfooting around on this invasion. They don’t follow the logic through to its conclusion. Noam Chomsky makes the same argument. It’s like burglars saying ‘we won’t rob your house, unless you get locks and an alarm’.
The hard left just stop at the point where they can lay equal blame on NATO but ignore the right to self determination and collective defence of a sovereign nation. You would think a union hardliner like Chomsky would notice the parallels, but that would mean conceding the west isn’t the root of all evil.

There are idealists out there who seem to imagine you can negotiate with Putin or send him flowers and he’ll change his mind or something. It’s fairly obvious he only understands the projection of power - hopefully economic power is enough.
There are some who seem to imagine they are on the “left” who seem to genuinely think that modern Russia is the USSR. They need to wake to and see what their dealing with. How in the name of anything can someone who is anti establishment in their politics support a regime like that? You’d be tolerated for about 3 mins in Russia if you went out protesting, as many protesters over the last few days were.

I’ve said it before on this thread, but people really have no idea how dependent we are on China. There’s this assumption that’s it’s all tat, or at best high end electronics assembly that the country outputs and that we can just transition away from that. And that’s completely missing his much they control essential resources etc. it’s nigh on impossible to remove them now.
There’s millions of men of fighting age in Ukraine. The instructions for using an NLAW is only three or four pages with captioned pictures, if the manual posted online is accurate. They seem to be landing in regular drops. They’ve gotten thousands now, every 10 NLAWs is going to result in at least 6-8 tanks getting fried.
This war has revealed how vapid, doctrinaire, oily and utterly gullible a lot of people on the left are. I'm instinctually left-wing, but I wouldn't like to even share a lift with some of the hard left with some of their gobsmackingly stupid utterances about this war.
