Why would they? Things were fairly stable for a couple of years, Ukraine seemed to be making some progress on corruption and it was a long way away before they had a chance of getting into NATO or the EU if that's what they wanted to do.

It has to find agreement in a practical sense only, there is no legal basis for SecDef etc to override the order. It is no different or better than the Russian setup. The sole authority to decide upon a launch is with the president. You could argue whether they can intervene on whether it is a legal command, but the aim of the strike is absolutely none of their business essentially.
Again, there is a difference between what may happen de facto vs de jure but legally there is zero communal decision making power for nuclear launches.
Now, there are plenty of discussions and arguments that this should change (see below). But it has not yet.

It’s not about having sympathy for them. My point this morning was why are those tennis players not being treated the same as the Paralympian’s and being banned from playing in tournaments ? Either the international sporting bodies are in lock step or it’s not going to work. This is about sending a message to Russia and Belarus that their actions have massive consequences.

Well he’s on the senate intelligence committee so yes he does have a contact, it’s the US intelligence community. That and it’s counter part in the House of Representatives get intelligence briefings on this stuff.

I think there should be some scope to say that if Belarus joins the war officially, then we can strike Belarus. This wouldn't technically be hitting Russia, but a client state. My complete guess as an amateur who really knows very little, is that it would not escalate to nuclear. Russia would try to hit back within the Belarussian theatre. We'd then have some more leverage in any negotiations.
I am surprised no one has raised this yet, or perhaps they have and I missed it, but Putin has just made the best case for nuclear proliferation possible. It's now a complete no-brainer.
As an Australian, I would like to urge Australia to immediately start a nuclear weapons program. Sweden should too if the have any sense. Germany and Taiwan should probably keep it secret until they have finished.

The point I made earlier. Putin is relying on geographical ignorance by his supporters. By invading Ukraine, Russia ends up bordering MORE NATO members.

There's a series of checks and balances in place called Command and Control. These are there to make sure that any authorisation of a nuclear strike has to go through a number validations before that command is acted upon, for reasons that should be obvious to all but the most simple minded.
Peter Feaver wrote a number of interesting articles on the matter a few years ago and one thing that stuck in my mind about this topic was that he mentioned that there are two situations involved here. 1 is where the "President wakes up the military". This basically means that the President has authorised a nuclear strike. This sets off a series discussions amongst a lot of people before anything can be acted upon. The second is where the "military wakes up the President", which is an entirely different prospect and one that likely means that an incoming strike has been detected and a retaliatory strike has to be initiated.
In the case of option 1 which is a first strike, the President cannot simply order such a thing and expect it to be carried out immediately. In the case of option 2, the enemies missiles are probably already inbound, so the necessity for justifying the authorisation is more than likely null and void.
