I think he's overplaying his hand with the threat of "we've got nukes".
Its only a matter of time before the west calls his bluff.
No. The redline is attacking NATO. Ukraine unfortunately is not the land we risk WW3 for. It can't be. Russia knows it and that's why the invaded. They know a NATO country is different and they wont invade.
Sanctions can be applied, supplies can be sent, but Western countries can't intervene militarily in this conflict. We can't have a scenario where US/Nato soldiers are shooting at Russian soldiers, that's WW3.
Wouldnt need a nuke to disable Shannon airport.
A flurry of snow is enough to bring the country to a standstill..
Hear hear!
The US don't need Shannon, and annihilating it wouldn't cause them to skip a beat. It's a refueling stop - a convenience for them, and them landing brings in some money for a under-funded regional airport for us. But it isn't of any strategic importance to the US. They have plenty of plenty of actual air bases a short hop away in the England, not to mention all across the other NATO members.
I think we can dial back the hysteria about Shannon getting nuked.
So Putins goal is to actually achieve the total destruction of Ukraine and its people. By doing so he secures Russias place as the the only petrostate in Europe. Ukraine will never recover from this war. He might well use some tactical nukes to ensure Ukraine never recovers.
It does not have to "find agreement".
There is a chain of command for the order to be disseminated and there are opportunities for intervention, but those interventions while potentially appropriate, would be illegal.
Honestly? I don't think the west will intervene militarily in Ukraine no matter how bad it gets. Biden and Johnson in particular have been clear that there won't be any UK/US boots on the ground there.
I don't really agree with it because I think the world in general has been given Putin inches for far too long and at some point you just have to stand your ground. If not now, when - will we stand by again when Moldova is inevitably next? How about Finland, Sweden? Will we let Poland be invaded (again) before anything is done to stop him?
To be fair, everyone has been very, very clear about "when". When a NATO member is attacked.
It would bring a tear to a glass eye
If a NATO country attacks Russia, then it's pretty much the end.
Russia will retaliate, and retaliating against NATO means nuclear war. This was pretty much what NATO was set up for during Warsaw Pact/NATO days.
and MAD was safeguard against WWIII.
Yes it does. They cannot act independently.
The sole and only authority to launch nuclear weapons lies with the President. No one else has any authority whatsoever to override or countermand those orders, nor do they require their assent.
Now if a president goes mad and decides to nuke China it is highly unlikely the order will work its way through the chain of command. But those who stop it will be breaking the law/disobeying orders. They have no legal authority to do it. The order merely needs to be relayed through several channels.
Precisely the opposite has happened. Putin has called the west's bluff. The west talked a great game about Ukraine's European future but are not willing to fight for it. Putin is not bluffing. When he makes threats, he means what he says.
Worth noting that little Marco has been right quite a bit in this war. I think he has a contact in US intel feeding him stuff. Looks like Putin needs to call in help.
The West barely talked about Ukraine full stop before this.
That when there doesn't give me any confidence it won't happen 😅
The available sources from the Cold War Era suggest that Shannon (and other airports) in Ireland would be used as backup in the event of major European airports having been destroyed. Obviously it would be in the Interest of the Soviets - that airports here would be destroyed. Does that same scenario hold today? Who knows
The President can AUTHORISE a nuclear strike. But it has to find agreement amongst others before it can be carried out. Such things as whether it's a legal command and what the aims of such a strike are.
It absolutely NOT the case that one guy says launch and it goes ahead.
And Russia will be defeated.
This woman from the Russian ministrey of foreign affairs is equally bizarre and scary. She was outraged that a journalist would ask a legitimate question..... she is a nutter and a very bad egg.
You'd wonder what they'd use them for.
The Russians are planning public executions in Ukraine to break morale Bloomberg reports.....
Ah sure whilst we are at it let's not forget Casement, just to be sure of disabling the ruthless IAC.
No it hasn't.
Has the west threatened or started war on Russia yet?
When the west makes its move let's see Putin show his hand.
Sorry if it’s been posted already but I’ve jumped lots of pages.
Panic buying in IKEA because they’re closing. Of all the things to rush out and get 😂
As a base for landing military planes I'd imagine, plus refueling, rearming etc
I think the west needs to intervene by taking Putin out or bombing the Russians or some sort of covert operation....an actual genocide is happening
Unfortunately putin can't control the weather ,he can launch numerous weapons including nukes .
