Anyone sell calves yet?
Hi base price, that's roughly what I thought myself, thanks for confirming. I passed through ennis Mart today, called in & checked the prices on lsl, saw two ch heifers make 475
Just remember that FR bull calf prices will be depressed in marts for the rest of the week with storm Dudley and more importantly for export shipping storm Eunice that is due to hit the south of the country later in the week.
Cork marts are starting the export sale again next week. How do you know when the boats are going. I mean how do you know when to hit a good mart
It depends on the weather. I ring a local dealer and he tells me if there's a boat going this week
I'm buying them of a friend directly, no Mart, just wanted to get an idea
I was going to carry a few fr bulls to the mart tomorrow, any updates
I heard they're going well enough.
Have the exporters being buying past few days. Being told by lad who calls here as an agent no boats going today Thur and probably not Sat again. Find it hard to believe. Anyone know?
I had them in Listowel wednesday all 4 weeks old 2 mighty fr. bulls E130 ,2 leggy f bulls 80 ,2 lightish f bulls 70 .They looked better at home
No boats going this weekend
We better get used to that going forward. In a few years I wouldn't be surprised if there were none full stop.
Got 50 today for 2-3 wk olds. Strong FRS 50 to 90 EUR. Weak lads 25 to 50. And jex were not bidded on. Any ways can't fill the milk tank and feed calves at the same time
The farming organisations should and will fight for them as long as they can.
The other side want to close it down and at the moment with the propaganda are gradually getting their way even to EU level.
Know what you're saying tho but we live in a world of propaganda now and how to influence people without them fighting back.
We never did find the name of that French young man abusing those Irish calves in the French lairage but the footage did it's job on those of influence.
Anyhoo sold four fr bulls during the week all roughly similar but from white calves to black calves at 4 - 5 weeks 60 to 150. Average 90.
Just saying I saw a12 month old fr bullock selling today for 870.so that's works out at e 2.44 per day.
What's the commission in the mart?
Sure the lads buying them have plenty money.
Work out 8.60 a calf
Related to the post as this is the world we live in now.
Ye all remember the hub bub of the recent BBC panorama on a dairy farm in England recently.
Dealer that takes some calves here isn't doing export anymore , he's buying calves for other farmers . He got a few fr bulls here today 50 each. Good to move a few on
Just want to ask any way of stopping calves sucking each other tried iodine dirt but nothing seems to stop them
Stockholm tar, crib halt or maybe a bit of grease
Could hang a clean empty drum over the pen, they might do their messing with that instead
Took 6 fr bulls to the mart yesterday. Between 2 and 3 weeks old. Made between 5 and 70 euro. Average 27 euro. Whoever bought them can't lose anyway and all the hard work done for them.
What are the teats on your feeders like
Jeez, don't use grease. You don't want that in a calf's stomach.
Neighbour landed 8 Fr bulls from the mart that were unsold. €30 for the lot plus the mart didn't charge commission as an incentive to take them. I called in to see them and they look much better than I expected, but it's the cost of feeding them is the question now.
Just put them on once a day with a first of nuts. Plenty hay/straw. The dairy farmer has the work done. They'll be worth multiple times their cost in 12 months.
Similar story to the wool market at present.
In times gone by, the sale of the wool paid for shearing and paid the concentrate bill for the year. Nowadays it doesn't cover the cost of shearing.
The wool has become a byproduct of meat production just like the friesian bull calf has become a byproduct of dairy production.
If there is any Jex breeding in them then the reality is with the cost of meal & feed & rented land them calves are worth nothing & only going to cost the lad that bought them money. Would be better off buying a calf at €100 that will respond to feeding and kill into a decent weight. Anything with jex is too expensive to feed for the return in weight gain that you get. Lads a slowly getting to realize this.
Multiple their cost in 12 months. FFS you know the costs and you know what you will get in a year's time. Can I borrow the crystal ball there please. Calfs need a good drop of milk till they are fit for grass and to be honest they would need a kg of nuts per day. I know there are lads here who can rear Friesians on fresh air. I can't. Il take the kids to the beach for the summer or go inside and watch tom and jerry before I'd go feeding those calfs at the cost of farming
