The rescue crew and the machine has been found. All dead. Crashed, but no more details available.

That could be WW3
Edit: MIG-21 is so old that an accident is another option.
Are you not aware Romania borders Ukraine at the Black Sea?
Interesting notes from an aviation guy on the state of Russian aviation - some implications for Ireland apparently.
The Russians (so far) don't actually enter UK airspace. They get close, but stay in international airspace, albeit airspace which the UK have responsibility for providing a flight information service. The RAF intercept and escort them away because that's all they can do in the situation.
From the TV tower attack yesterday. Saw a video yesterday showing the bodies without any advance content warning. Horrible and grim. RIP.
They are well intentioned but naive. Some wars are justified eg The Battle of Britain.
Turkey blew a Russian jet out of the sky over Turkish space or controlled.space over NorthWestern Syria. A few years ago.
There were major recriminations and a bit of asskissing for the optics but the reality is that Russia was forced to shove the incident up its hole as 1. Turkey would be buying some air defence systems from them and 2. Well, Turkey is Turkey and not to be messed with on their home patch. You could say goodnight to the Russian adventure in Syria if Turkey had decided that was not happening any longer.
If Russia has shot down Romanian craft, it won't be the end of the world. It will enable increased NATO activity.
The ports around there are quite significant in shipping in and out resources, minerals, food etc.
There will be very significant global impact from making that water unsafe for travel and uninsurable to shipping.
It's a cheap way of hitting back hard against Europe and making the rest of the world amicable to Russia, the behemoth who can still export.
Will the Ukraine be spraying, shaking their winter wheat and sowing spring wheat etc in the next 8 weeks.
10% of the world's wheat depends on.
A big help to grain giants China and Russia who between them already dominate the entire spectrum of global grains.
If this Zhirinovsky story is true then NATO had better get ready to roll.
He has also called for forcibly retaking Alaska from the US.
Looks like the MiG was doing a patrol over the region in orange below, Dobrogea and was over the Black Sea at the time of the incident.
The Mig was over land and had reported bad weather, looks like an accident.
The socialists seem to be terrified they will end up supporting the same side as the US military, massacres in Ukraine are no reason to blemish the socialist cred.
So the Russians said it would not be an occupation, but they're setting up a military administration...i.e occupation.
I have to admit I find it hard to understand the outrage over the attack on the TV tower. Didn't NATO airstrike a Serbian TV station killing a dozen civilians? Doesn't the US attack pretty much every civilian infrastructure (electricity, water, gas, oil, media) it can during its interventions? No war crime charges were ever brought in those cases. So isn't hitting enemy media just the norm?
They are having trouble in Ukraine where WW2 weapons are a sizable part of the armament.
There was 2 Ukrainian army men on patrol, one had a scopped rifle, a Mosin Nagant, a very old bolt action model, if it had seen action in WW1, you wouldn't be surprised. Considered a fantastic rifle but you get my point.
That was my first thought too. Why are they still flying Mig-21s? 🤔 RIP.
The willingness of some to totally dispense with any critical thinking and swallow the Kremlin propaganda machine hook line and sinker is mind boggling. Essentially when you read the comments of those being taken in by this on here it amounts to “Ukraine and the west aren’t perfect, therefore who are we to question the invasion”
Good thread, but the point about Irish leasing companies being "criminally liable" if they don't end the leases is rubbish, unless of course Ireland make it a criminal offence to do so, which we have not.
My best-friend is Romanian. She advised me to drop supplies to the Moldova stores
Was thinking just the same myself. Use seized Russian money to pay for the destruction they have caused.
It's the location of the tower more than the tower itself that's the issue. It's right beside the site of, and a memorial to, the massacre of Babi Yar, where over 33,000 Jews were killed by the Nazis over the mere space of two days in 1941. Firing missiles at a target a few metres from the place a major war crime occurred is not a good move. It's reported that the memorial area itself was damaged. There's some suggestion the people killed were visiting the memorial site.
Some light bed time reading ...
An insightful assessment made in January.
So is the memorial more important than the civilians who died in the attack? That seems monstrous to me.
Agreed.
Absolute tossers
It would break EU sanctions. Ireland is in the EU. Breaking sanctions = illegal no?
That's not what the quoted post said, not sure why you are trying to imply otherwise
I'm sure it could be arranged 😈
Reports Russia expected to introduce martial law within the country maybe from Friday.
The Russian Federation Council is set to hold an unscheduled meeting on Friday, leading to widespread speculation in Moscow that the country might impose martial law.
The introduction of martial law would give the authorities sweeping powers to limit freedom of movement and freedom of speech. Martial law has been introduced in modern Russia.
Tatyana Stanovaya, a prominent Russian political analyst and founder of R.Politik on Wednesday evening tweeted that introducing a martial law would be a “logical scenario.”
“The proclamation of martial law will allow the authorities to introduce military censorship, to increase the secrecy of the state’s activities and the actions of local bodies.”
With the introduction of martial law, the powers of elected bodies, local authorities and officials are automatically extended.
It was claimed the people killed were visiting the memorial site. They certainly weren't on a family outing to a "legitimate target" TV tower. The only thing monstrous in the sutuation is bombing innocent civilians, and no-one is saying otherwise.
