The ports around there are quite significant in shipping in and out resources, minerals, food etc.
There will be very significant global impact from making that water unsafe for travel and uninsurable to shipping.
It's a cheap way of hitting back hard against Europe and making the rest of the world amicable to Russia, the behemoth who can still export.
Will the Ukraine be spraying, shaking their winter wheat and sowing spring wheat etc in the next 8 weeks.
10% of the world's wheat depends on.
A big help to grain giants China and Russia who between them already dominate the entire spectrum of global grains.
Turkey blew a Russian jet out of the sky over Turkish space or controlled.space over NorthWestern Syria. A few years ago.
There were major recriminations and a bit of asskissing for the optics but the reality is that Russia was forced to shove the incident up its hole as 1. Turkey would be buying some air defence systems from them and 2. Well, Turkey is Turkey and not to be messed with on their home patch. You could say goodnight to the Russian adventure in Syria if Turkey had decided that was not happening any longer.
If Russia has shot down Romanian craft, it won't be the end of the world. It will enable increased NATO activity.
They are well intentioned but naive. Some wars are justified eg The Battle of Britain.
From the TV tower attack yesterday. Saw a video yesterday showing the bodies without any advance content warning. Horrible and grim. RIP.
The Russians (so far) don't actually enter UK airspace. They get close, but stay in international airspace, albeit airspace which the UK have responsibility for providing a flight information service. The RAF intercept and escort them away because that's all they can do in the situation.
Interesting notes from an aviation guy on the state of Russian aviation - some implications for Ireland apparently.
Are you not aware Romania borders Ukraine at the Black Sea?
The rescue crew and the machine has been found. All dead. Crashed, but no more details available.

That could be WW3
Edit: MIG-21 is so old that an accident is another option.
Totally agree. Having been there a couple of times on business, I was never happier than on the plane home. A hyper materialistic hellhole.
Why shouldn't it be there? Parts of the Black Sea fall into Romanian airspace, they're fully within their rights to investigate anything suspicious either in their airspace or heading their way. The Black Sea isn't just Russia"s playground to do with as they choose.
I don't believe that changes anything. Russia would have to deliberately attack and officially state they were attacking a NATO member for the organisation to get involved in a conflict with them.
Not quite enough for NATO involvement. If shot down, will be seen as 'fog of war' mistake. Unless Russia keeps doing it in which case it's time to just go full on cocaine and hookers until the end comes.
Why was a Romanian Mig there in the first place.? This could trigger Romania into a reaction. Russia over the years has shot down airlines that enter their restricted airspace, they don't mess about. Europe, and UK tolerate Russia constantly flying into their air space with fighter jets.
What changed is that Putin appears to have gone mad in the meantime. Several people who know him personally say his mood and demeanour seems to have darkened considerably in the period since and he has developed a huge chip on his shoulder about Ukraine.
They could pull out and still save face." It was all the dead guys (putin)idea ". Because as it stands the west is united as never before, Russia is losing billions, the Russian citizens are realising what's happening and more important are realising they cannot hide behind the " we never knew " act forever. BTW great to see a convoy of weaponry setting off from Belgium yesterday.
Yep - Putin apparently fooled the oligarchs back in the late 1990s that he would be an easily controlled puppet. 22 years later, the oligarchs who thought they could control him are dead or imprisoned with their (ill gotten) assets seized. The smart ones retain their wealth but stay out of politics. It is not the 1990s in Russia anymore.
If they were shot down then we might all want to hug our loved ones.
He's pissing off the Bangladeshis now.
I disagree wholeheartedly with their vote but their reasons are more nuanced than soundbites allow for and certainly, while socialist-minded and concerned for the ordinary people, they're no fans of Putin's Russia and Putin himself is no red commie apart from wishing to ape those at the top table, the more equal of the Soviet pigs.
Nothing is black and white. Their grandstanding on this vote won't be forgotten however. They had their reasons but, like a lot of politicians, they forgot they're ONLY there to represent. They'll be reminded in due course.
He needs to get a rest. Appoint one or two other spokespersons to stand in for a bit as possible replacements. No use to his cause if he is sick or is assassinated.
The airspace violation is maybe just a flex. Russia does that all the time even during time of 'peace'. The Romanian incident is more worrying. Sounds a bit crass, but I hope the Romanian jet and chopper went down due to 'natural causes' so to speak.
The Swedish incident was near the island of Gotland, where it just happens Finland and Sweden are conducting joint military excercies - obviously not a coincidence that the Russians just happen to be passing by at the same time.
Between that incident, the interception by the Swedes outlined below and another incident reported earlier today about Russian helicopters violating Japanese air space, I have a really bad feeling about where this is going.
Romanian MiG went down, Romanian chopper sent out on search and rescue disappears off radar.
2 aircrafts??? Romania is a NATO member....
Supposedly an air assault, the 95th is an airmobile unit. The location is on a Russian supply route, but it seems very strange to send a unit out that way unless there's a plan to either retrieve it or relieve it.
All due respect to The Scotsman, but they are off-base here. Neither cluster munitions nor thermobarics are prima facie prohibited under the commonly accepted laws of war. There are the normal considerations of how they are used, but that is no different from any other munition type. See the BBC, for example: "There are no international laws specifically banning their use, but if a country uses them to target civilian populations in built-up areas, schools or hospitals, then it could be convicted of a war crime under the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907." Again, it's how it's used, not if it's used.
Even at that, I would observe that the quote you give specifically excludes the current Russia-Ukraine war from its understanding as it is an international armed conflict.
There is a Convention on Cluster Munitions which about half the countries have signed, including Ireland, UK, France and Germany, but major combatants like US, Russia, China, India, Korea Ukraine or Poland which consider themselves the ones most likely to use/need them have not signed. I can tell you that countries which have removed them from their inventories have discovered a significant capabilities gap.
Unfortunately, people seem to have this bizarre concept of wars being 'clean', which they assuredly are not, and there is a lot of misconception over what actually is banned under the Laws of Warfare, those which are restricted by mutual policy, such as cluster munitions or land mines, and those which are merely thought to be restricted such as white phosphorous.
heard there’s a Romania mig missing but a helicopter too?
I hate the way you sit on the fence like that!🤣
When I say provoked I don't mean he was right to invade. He was given an excuse. What he done is evil but he got his excuse from nato.
Saw a clip earlier of Zelensky talking to a UK reporter for a few minutes, he looked wrecked I'd say he hasn't slept since this started.
