He had a certain fan base here and some weren't gone on him.
He disappeared very fast last year and now he's about to sue Twitter.
Will it be publically disclosed what he is taking the action for before it makes it to court?
Will he be taking on Reddit too because it was all over there as well.
He also shared this on Twitter. Interesting site to use.
did they not take all of the speculation down already
I've no idea who he is, but judging by that letter it sounds like he was the subject of some very serious false allegations by some outright lunatic.
It happens and continues to happen in society and the celebrity world.
Once there is a few quid to be made, you're always open to this kind of thing
Begs a question though, why did he go into hiding at the beginning of this? Seems a weird thing to do but, however
There are still posts speculating what happened there. Or there were a few weeks ago anyway.
What quids are being made? No one sold a story or anything. Either people got wind of something said and posted it on twitter.
Regardless of it being true or not.
I would have thought a platform like twitter would have something in the small print to exclude them from liabiity in the case some lunatic would make some mad comments.
As a previous poster has said, I do find it strange that he didn't address the comments sooner considering he claims to be innocent.
Like a less aware Sideshow Bob.
Like him or not this has been another example of a wider problem. These ''claims'' are just taken as fact without question.
I found it really odd that RTE accepted the allegations at face value and terminated his contract, twitter allegations were suddenly The Gardai, DPP, Judge and jury rolled into one.
He got a serious pasting on here as well to be fair..the "woke" McDermott thing zzz
Just shows it might make more sense to let legal proceedings etc play out without him being hung drawn and quartered.
Can't stand the obnoxious prick but wouldn't wish that kind of false allegation on anyone.
That horrible yoke shouldn't get away with what she did.
She should be prosecuted. False allegations are nasty and can destroy people.
Not sure whether the lad was investigated by AGS pr the DPP though. Looks like he had a really good legal team so fair dues. I don't think there were any legal proceedings against him. COuld be wrong though.
For what crime?
not much if anything there based on searches, the search isn't a good feature
Was there ever any official complaint made against him or did this all just come from a anonymous twitter account?
You can't prosecute someone for defamation. It's a civil matter.
The statement from her solicitor is extremely carefully worded though. The only element cleared up is that she was in fact over the age of consent. A lot of the other details given in her account weren't responded to by McDermott. He obviously accepts they had a relationship at some point so what about the other things that were alleged?
I believe the guy deserves a fresh start and his job back by all means but there are other things I think he should respond to.
Actually defamation is a crime under Irish law. You are entitled to your good name under the constitution. It is both a civil and a criminal matter. It usually is a civil case when it's a newspaper/media entity but if it's an individual it can be prosecuted as a criminal offence. The Defamation Act 2009.
At no point does it say that the claim of sexual assault was false, just that she shouldn't have retweeted other people's claims.
Anyway, he was only a 27 year old banging a 17 year old, perfectly normal behavior.
Why is the woman who made the false alegations not being named? Surely her name should be in the public so prospective partners can give her a wide berth. If there are other males who have suffered at her hands they might be willing to come forward.
Defamation Act 2009 covers it quite well.
He's still a bellend, no solicitor letter will change that I'm afraid.
Bit more detail in the article on the journal
I think he got a hard time but a lot of that was related to how people thought he'd react around somebody accused of something.
Maybe he is, but this story is absolutely outrageous.
Hopefully he wins, might get a lot of the absolute sc*mbags off twitter and the rest of social media.
