put big umbrellas over it and turn it into and alfresco drinking/dining street. That would be great. Which is why it will never happen.

That's what should have been done ages back given it is a pedestrianized street. Not sure eif there is still seeing as Thomas/Catherine St. have stolen the march there.

The council don't even seem able to make something as small as the Milk Market into an Al fresco food court.

Once the Opera site is done they'll be moving onto the Cleeves site. Expect planning work to be done as the Opera site is built. They've already gotten government finding for a pedestrian/cycling bridge across the Shannon from the Howleys Quay/Bishops Quay area to O'Callaghan Strand.

In Wickham Way market on Saturdays, there’s lots of really cool stuff in there. There’s vinyl records, a stall selling Pokémon cards for kids, vintage clothes, pop culture stuff and lots of fantastic artists. Building an upstairs food area too. Seems to be lots of new stalls in the recently. Almost like a new business nursery.

Ireland seems very slow to the uptake on the food market thing. I've been to a bunch in the UK and I'm sure it will go from strength to strength

I was in that Wickham market a couple weekends ago and was very impressed, i couldnt get over the space in there either! It has huge potential as a space.

Council are restricting them to their stringent "market times" despite the fact it is in a building and off the road. That's why they are only officially open Fri - Sunday and closed up by 4:30

Argos in the Crescent closing on March 1st, leaving just the Childers Road branch.

first there was three now there is one, a result of people shopping online during lockdown i guess?

The thoughts of trying to get to that argos around Christmas is already giving me drivers rage.

The rent and rates in the Crescent SC are astronomical, the unit Cruises Street was pretty small.so I'd say those were factors too. The Childers Road unit was their primary store since it opened with a fairly large store room that tended to carry more stock than the other two stores. Most of it now is reserve/pay/delivery online or via the kiosks in store anyway so your really only have to interact with a human when collecting at the counter. Similar to screwfix.ie.

I'd believe that about the crescent, that's why I can't understand that womens clothes shop that has been closed since last year yet still has the lights on every day with full rails of stock and mannequins dressed in the window. How are they getting away with it? It's the one near the escalator.

At a guess, there could well be a dispute between the former retailer or their creditors (if gone into liquidation) and the SC management company if there is outstanding rent or rates owed.

That's the thing and why I'm glad the city centre is moving away from relying on chain shops.

They could not give a fk about you and your traffic problem as long as the profit margin is better by having one store. And when somewhere new comes along they will all be out of Childers and we will have another empty dump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,906 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

But how is the traffic problem in the city centre and the Crescent SC any different to Childers Road around Christmas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,078 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Well the traffic will get worse the more stuff concentrates on Childers.

Also traffic is different for different people depending on where you live.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,737 ✭✭✭RocketRaccoon

The Childers Road has always had traffic issues, I worked there back in 2005-06 and even then, it was awful. One entrance and exit is a disaster and they've managed to make it even worse over the last few years with the changes they made to the road around the front of dunnes.

If I ever need to go there, I will only do it first thing in the morning. Weekends are an absolute no-go for me.

You could argue the same points for keeping only one of the other stores open instead of the Childers Road one too. It obviously came down to which store was the most profitable which is the bottom line with any business.

I know, I lived near by before moving out of the city 15 years ago. The retail park was a product of the Celtic Tiger/brown envelope era. But I don't think consolidating something like an Argos store will make much difference to traffic problems in the city as a whole at Christmas to be honest. Every city is the same.

I'm not arguing for keeping one or the other I don't use Argos so it won't impact me. But it will impact an Argos customer in many parts of the city. Not sure what's going on with the Crescent but there seems to be a lot moving out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,737 ✭✭✭RocketRaccoon

No, it won't make the traffic worse. I was just making the point that if I was ordering something in argos at Christmas, I'd hate to have to go there. I always use the one in the crescent.

I'd say it's more the chain stores are moving from relying on the city centre

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,078 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Well ya. I suppose I'm glad the city centre has finally copped that and is changing focus cause they ain't ever coming back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 755 ✭✭✭TheWonderLlama

The city would welcome them or any other chain back in the morning if they went into the old Roches Stores or any other retail space for that matter.

There's a second entrance, but it only works if coming in Bloodmill Road. It's very handy if coming in from the Tipperary road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,212 ✭✭✭✭Berty

Here's another one. When entering the retail park when you know it's busy then park anywhere on the right hand side and then when you go to leave and there's a mad queue then go down passed the door of KFC, around the back of Costa and arrive out to the front of the queue looking to leave. Only works if you are going left onto the road, not towards Parkway.

Shhh, don't tell everyone. I always use it and its brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,906 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

You can also park outside Claughaun GAA club and just walk across to the retail park.

Tried calling McGuinness suit hire, Hyde Rd. there this week (twice) but no answer. Is that closed as well?

Admittedly its been about a decade since I called there so maybe he finished up. Anyone know?

I don't know if he's finished up, but Denis would be in his 70s now so it wouldn't surprise me.
