And even if they were released there's the catch 22 of getting them back, asides from routing and getting pilots there, if you fly them as the operators aircraft prior to a hand back they can't enter EU airspace, if you change them over to the lessors beforehand they can't take off from Russian airports. Potentially Russia could hand them back making them EU aircraft meaning they are automatically grounded and then have the cheek to issue airport parking fees to the lessors.

They've obviously made a major miscalculation here. They probably thought they'd take Kiev in a day or two and it would all be over quickly but now that it's turning into a long protracted and messy affair things have changed. But it's impossible to know what it's like in the Kremlin. Is he surrounded by yes men or do some advisors give him a realistic picture and they just underestimated the Ukranians? When people like Alisher Usmanov, Alexei Mordashov and Roman Abramovich start getting personally targeted with sanctions then Putin is definitely under pressure.
