I wouldn't be going near any of that table water. Is there any country as untrustworthy as the Russians, even in this type of setting. Between Navalny, the Salsbury poisonings and numerous other events at a state level they are brutal.

This is not a slight on average Russians, just the Putin regime methods.

This thread is full of celebration of anything Ukraine says which makes it viewed positively. i.e there was a figure quoted on the first day of the number of Russian troops killed. This was called out as being unlikely and quite high by experts on Sky News and to take everything with a pinch of salt because of the propaganda at play.

You have people posting Ukrainian posts that say the Russians are running out of steam and it's celebrated here as if it's 100% true. How is that all going to look when Russia does take control? Because it's only a matter of time.

If you want to pretend there's no western propaganda or that you're too clever to buy into it then off with you.

    🙄

Stop acting like I am defending Russia. I'm simply saying why I think russia view the west the way they do.

I'll respond to your comment anyways. The Ukrainians are absolutely free to join the EU. But when was the referendum? And why are the EU urging countries to join who have no referendum on EU membership? EU membership is up for Ukraine and it's people to decide, not the EU urging countries to join.

This will go down very well with Putin & co!

The EU is expecting Ukraine’s application to join the European Union “imminently” and officials in Brussels said “this will need to be assessed very rapidly by the council and the decision made as to whether to request an urgent opinion from the European commission”.

It would be quicker to point out why you believe that Wibbs admires Putin considering you have done the accusing.

Apparently he was asked by the Ukrainians to attend. Interesting.

The question itself was stupidly framed. But the broader question about what a world war would do to the climate issue is relevant, if not immediate. The immediate concern is survival so no consideration would be given to environmental concerns to fight a war. After the war those environmental concerns would have to be dealt with.

The British built social housing and created the NHS in the wake of ww2. They would never do anything thst socially minded or ambitious now. Maybe the aftermath of a major war is the only time people feel connected enough to each other to really invest in something this ambitious.

I wouldn't be too surprised if the world gets serious about climate change after a major war, especially considering th at a major war would probably exacerbate the problem. But in any case, its a question for later.

EU waiting for membership application from Ukraine, which they say will be "assessed very rapidly". Good, I hope they get into the EU fast, it's the least we can do for them.

Robbie is just tilting at Right-Wing windmills, Wibbs. I can only imagine when you "see" (i.e. imagine) Racists, Right-Wingers, and Xenophobes everywhere, it can be pretty tiring. To the point that you get paranoid and histrionic.

Almost like 1950's Good Ole 'Muricans with their "Reds under the Bed" delusions.

A relative of mine who fought with the Americans in Europe in WW2 said similar even with combat troops. That a battle could be going on with men fighting and dying, yet a field away other soldiers could be brewing up coffee and having a fag break. That it could be be very surreal in how local and 'small' it was at times.

Personally, I think no nukes will be involved too. I know, I know, I'm just some random Joe so what do I know. However, nuking your next door neighbour would bring more consequences than resolves.

Nuclear fallout going back to Russia, Russia and Putin painting a big target on their back, Russian allies may change their minds.

I want Ukraine in the EU- we can afford it and as we’ve seen it’s an absolute security and economic must.

Good luck to any EU country who would even consider voting against it.

Zelensky just jumped the queue and good luck to him.

Has anyone a link to Red Cross or whatever? It looks like supplies for the refugees aren't an issue for now, would like somewhere to keep an eye on in case they make any appeals as things continue.

We ALL live in a world of narratives, including you. Propaganda is a form of lying designed to influence attitudes and behaviours. Do you think your actions/attitudes have been influenced by propaganda?

Criticizing 'themmuns' prop without criticizing your own is just entry-level resistance to the existence of propaganda.

Look how angry his posts are now. Each one contains attempts at personal insults and abuse. Yet the easiest thing to do with be to deny any admiration for putin or his actions.

So it seems strange he has time to post abuse but not a denial of admiration for putin.

Anyway enough of this cesspool boards thread. I was much happier over the past week when I didn't post in this shithole forum. Although I don't know how happy I can be knowing innocent people are likely to die because of a manic like Putin and this unjust war.

I suggest a European Criminal Assets bureau to seize and clean up the immense ill gotten gains from all these Russian oligarchs- I’m sick of their carry on and are a direct threat to all our democracies. Crazy carry on, and many of Europe’s political class complicit in this get the same treatment.

The cropping on that image is shocking, 0/10, do not recommend.

The EU can't just accept countries willy nilly, especially countries in a war.

Ukraine is actually very corrupt, it's second lowest in Europe...behind Russia.

Everyone views Ukraine as the perfect democracy with EU values now when in fact it is highly troubled.....they'd cause more problems for the EU like Hungary and Poland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,235 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Why do you want Ukraine in the EU? Any downsides?

  • Posts: 2,825 ✭✭✭ Esther Calm Valedictorian

Well that should be a quick nail in the Russian banking coffin.

    Idiotic statement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,120 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

    Ukraine in the EU.

And Putin was paranoid a week ago....

So people on bulletin boards and social media are casually calling for the EU 27 to enter a full on war with Russia. At the drop of a hat.

We'll hope those really responsible for strategic decisions are taking counsel and remaining prudent.

The EU isn't accepting them. Ukraine has never applied. If they did they would undoubtedly go on the entry track, but it is one Turkey has been on for decades.

There was zero imminent chance of Ukraine joining the EU, there is an incredibly tiny chance of it happening now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,709 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    What on you on about?

How does the EU 'decide' for Ukraine to join without Ukraine having a say also. They can't just send the completed membership by post to Ukraine and tell them they've already in.

Near the end of WW2 Hitler called for the burning of Paris. His army refused...

It looks like history is starting up again.

There is an over-optimism on this thread and it keeps getting intensified because there's no one to reign it in.

Most Irish people are experiencing this war as media consumers, so they want it to be pleasurable for themselves, which means optimistic boosterism of the Ukrainian side.

When I saw boardsies were sending money to Ukrainian bank accounts that takes the biscuit.

Ukraine and Russia are peas in a pod in terms of corruption. Ukraine has oligarchs who buys politicians. The judicial system is a loaded dice so that the connected can use judges to send their business or political rivals to prison.

You might as well throw your money into the Shannon.

Not entirely sure I'd count a full scale Russian invasion as a "drop of the hat".
