And there is Iran, with talks of a nuclear deal also which will ease the markets, so I’d say there will be a push for that.
Either Ukraine agree a deal or there's going to be hundreds of thousands dead.
Not sure what the right thing to do is but Zelenskyy and his government are going to be killed if they don't agree a deal.
I wonder what would happen if Zelenksyy agreed to never join NATO, would Putin pull all troops out then?
Rouble taking a pounding, Sberbank down almost 75% at one point. Russian interest rates at 20%. They are in or entering the kind of territory where we might see bank runs.
Sorry about the repost, couldn't delete the damn link with this ridiculous new site
No matter what happens, relations between Russia and the West have been put back decades
Best case scenario outcome here and everything has still changed
Calm down. That wont happen. Putin thought he'd tale Kiev with little resistance. He's not sure what to do now. I don't see hundreds of thousands dead. That wont be let happen.
I am not aware of it but throw up a few links to prove it .
That's moving along under its own steam and there are lots of roadblocks to overcome so probably a way to go on that. The interesting thing there is if oil sanctions were lifted, Russian supplies could be blocked as the Iranians are said to have large stockpiles.
I wonder what would have happened if Putin did not invade.
Ukraine has the right to choose its own destiny. Cop on.
You would hope with the intelligence the Ukraine forces have, along with what US are supplying them, that they have already factored in all these scenarios, and have plans already made for a retreat of the forces when and if needed.
I would imagine they would have better intelligence than the strategists here on boards have anyway :)
If there's a continuing war where civilians are fighting then it's very possible. This can go on years.
The naivety in this post is extraordinary.
Its about the land grab with him and trying to reinstate the USSR. No more or no less.
This invasion kicked off because a Putin ally, Viktor Medvedchuk who is chairman of the biggest opposition in Ukraine was put on house arrest and all his assets seized last year. Medvedchuks daughter is Putins god daughter. The day after being put under house arrest, Putin put 3k troops on the Ukraine border.
Putin was angry as he had no Russian influence in Ukraine. Zelenskyy blocked his TV channels etc.
Even in 2014, the invasion happened when the pro Russian government were ousted. Putin just wants Ukraine under the influence with Russia.
People saying covid came from a lab are absolutely still called conspiracy theorists.
The Iraq war peaked at 30k deaths in one year. To reach "hundreds and thousands" of deaths, as you say, this would war would have to match that for 5-6 years. That's not going to happen - Russia can't afford that.
The EU's quarrel with Poland is about democracy and the rule of law, In Poland it's mostly about the independence of the courts and judiciary, and in any case the Poles seem to have rowed back somewhat. It has little of nothing to do with imposing LGBT stuff in schools.
As for it kicking off in 2013, I very much doubt it, but I'll leave that to historians.
Even the WHO who are now saying it's possible?
Iraqi civilians didn't take up arms and fight like the Ukrainians.
Edit: didn't read second half of post. Really kicked off around 2014 when Ukraine decided to get rid of a corrupt Russian puppet whilst choosing to favour the EU. Putin annexed Crimea, invaded S.E. Ukraine, and set a course to invade the whole country, which we see right now. With hindsight, any recent events were just window dressing, it was already in motion for years.
Ok do you have a link to the WHO saying that? Is it a peer reviewed report?
I guess they'll be handed an ultimatum. Either accept the dismemberment of your country (east and south go to Russian control) or don't and fire rains down on your cities tonight.
There is so much wrong, or rather extremely naive and ignorant of history with this post. Putin is no lunatic. He's no idiot either. Of course it helps us feel better by painting an enemy as both of those things, but it's a nonsense. You don't go from a lowly KGB operative to running the biggest country on earth like the czars of old with remarkable speed and sustaining that for decades by being either a lunatic or an idiot.
I wonder where such odd and improbable ideas about what is underlying the friction between Hungary/Poland and EU (and indeed other EU members) could have come from?
I don't expose myself to them but could the output of likes of Russia Today/Sputnik have anything to do with it at all? I suppose some of the boards posters may miss these if harder to access.
Sanctions targeting these planes would sting badly!
What gmisk said on the WHO link
You may have noticed Iraqis blowing themselves up with disturbing regularity during that period. Do you not think that counts for something?
And you've ignored the point that Russia can't afford to continue this fight for years.
What's the story with this supposed shutdown of RT in the EU? RT.com is still up and RT is still available on the Astra 28.2E satellite. I can understand there might be technical issues with blocking the website, but surely for the broadcast version it'd just be a case of Astra physically pulling the plug the feed?
Either Russia stands down, retreats or it doesn't have any economy anymore and a pile of war dead. See it works both ways.
I think Zelenskyy has proven that he is willing to die for his country with his actions, Putin and his junta definitely aren't hiding in their bunkers and ranting to a captive audience on Russian TV.
Looking at the Ukrainian people and their conduct against this criminal invasion so far nothing suggests to me they will fold if Zelenskyy is killed or Kiev falls. If anything they will be more determined to kill the invader. Look at the videos of people standing down tanks with no weapons, look at the guys on Snake Island who told the Russian Navy to F-Off despite knowing they would die, Look at the young engineer that blew himself up so a bridge couldn't be used by Russian tanks.
If Russia don't stand down they are fucked. They have been shown to the world as a lot weaker than anticipated and the sharks are now circling.
Actually it was 2008, according to the then head of NATO
You didn't even read my full comment before replying lol
From videos coming out of Ukraine, more civilians are being killed by Ukrainian voluntary militias and gangs than the Russians
Handing out AK47s to every Tom Dick and Harry on the street was a ridiculous idea. These people are not trained to use them or even identify targets. Documented cases of friendly fire from armed civilians on Ukrainian vehicles too. Unless Russians start indiscriminately bombing or killing civilians I doubt we'd come close to 100k dead in this war.
