The problem for Putin is that if he thinks he can get away with occupying the Donbass region permanently, he can think again. Not a single one of the sanctions against Russia will be lifted as long as there are Russian troops there (even if this goes on for years).

Very doubtful. That's still a massive loss for Russia. Putin wants to avoid attacks or an invasion on Russia. When Kennedy was assassinated the US government were in a total panic in case it turned out to be a Russian sniper and what their response would have to be.

If so, Russia may assume they are refueling and rearming at EU airbases.
If the Ukranians can infiltrate Moscow and other Russian cities then a provo IRA style bombing campaign might also work. Bring the war home to Putin.

If the jets are in the sky then technically it might not count as EU soldiers on the ground. How would Putin verify who is flying them anyway.
Very impressive how quickly that moved. So many questions, are they flying into Ukrainian airpspace locked and loaded and who is piloting them? Ukrainian pilots would have had to mobilise westwards to collect fairly quickly.
Russia seem close to establishing the landbridge with Crimea and taking the eastern provinces. I mean making sense militarily of course, not this whole thing to begin with.
Kidnapping is a very common fund raising activity in that part of the world..but I've come across it in many other country's too. Friends of mine have been kidnapped, and I've had one or two close shaves myself....last minute change of plan, arrive late maybe, or find out that a kidnap might take place, and change plans immediately.
