I’m actually very impressed and dare I say proud of the west’s response to this crisis, honestly feared Ukraine would be left to fend for itself for fear of “angering” Putin.
With that said, is the enormity of the sanctions and material support starting to push us into a situation where we are effectively fighting a proxy war with Russia? The EU directly using EU funds to support a non EU country and now talking of directly supplying fighters (arguably the most vital and difficult to secure weapon in a modern war) really means we are shy only actual soldiers on the ground. While I do completely support these actions I am starting to struggle to see how this doesn’t continue to escalate towards Putin carrying out his threats regarding nukes.
Bar him being taken out from within, how the hell else does this end? He’s never going to back down and how long before he sees nukes as his only remaining escalation against what he sees as provocative escalations from the West?

Words matter. At the moment it seems the Russian population is not up for this war. It would take very very little for that to completely switch and the population to back Putin to the last. The west should at least try to prevent that happening by not shooting their mouths off.

There are some posters on this thread now accusing the EU of exacerbating the entire situation by putting their support behind Ukraine. A few weeks ago, there were posters berating NATO and the US for causing this situation. Open your eyes people. The real culprit here is Putin and his cronies. He is trying to take the West hostage.

He doesn't care I am afraid he is an absolute psychopath, he seems happy to sacrifice his own citizens as well (lots of young soldiers with little training...some who clearly don't want to fight and some who thought they were on a training exercise seemingly...).

I hope it is people telling porkies to get out of there quicker, but there are a lot of people making the same claims. Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and properly. And they are right, in general, Africans get pushed to the back of every list.
Anyway, another item to add the post-conflict list, I suppose. Doesn't change the over-arching rights/wrongs of the situation. My main hope is of a coup or similar within Russia, taking Putin out and deescalating the situation for all of us.

Typically a military coup results in even more hawkish people taking the reigns of power.
Putin is playing chicken with the rest of the world, and the fact is that Russia can and would win any nuclear exchange. I think the notions that previous projections of how a nuclear exchange would work between Russia and the west can be thrown out the window. It is conceivable that any direct military interference from the west could lead to multiple ICBM's being launched to destroy NATO in one swift motion.
The slowing down of the invasion to a pessimistic eye could well be a ruse, make the world believe you're weak before unleashing the true power of the Russian military. We've already seen atrocities in Ukraine, I don't believe Putin gives a damn how his troops abuse the Ukrainians because ultimately I think he sees himself as being on a path that does not lead back to the previously existing world order.
Putin is a mad man but sadly I don't for a second believe there's a lot of rational people in Russia that would take over and calm this situation if he were removed from power. Old scores from the cold War are looking likely to be settled and the potential for Billions of deaths is more real than at any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Hard to believe this is something that is even conceivable but here we are.
