thing is most people thought he was posturing about invading Ukraine, then he went ahead and did it. he's not in a normal state of mind according to many reports. you would hope if he gave a crazy nuke order the generals would revolt and take him out.
So the whole of EU making the move was just a coincidence?
Let's assume that the risk of nuclear war was real and present - and Vladimir is serious.
Nuclear war means the end of civilisation. With radiation spreading through the globe and so-called "fallout", it would even mean the end for China - even though it's not involved in the conflict.
In fact, it would be the end of everything: global food supply chains, energy etc.
A nuclear war is therefore China's worst nightmare.
So, even though I haven't any inside knowledge about how these things work, I find it very hard to believe that China (and other global powers) would effectively sit back and allow the destruction of their own countries?
Now, I could be totally wrong.
But surely mechanisms exist between global powers that stop this kind of eventuality?
Will I get to use my packet of iodine pills now.
Had a conversation with a friend whose daughter in law Is eastern eurpean. He was talking to her dad last week about Ukraine and he's totally pro putin for the simple reason he doesn't like the way things in the west are progressing.
Nonsense. It's symbolic. And symbols matter.
It will still take years for their EU accession, even if it's fast-tracked.
A month ago though, it would have been unthinkable.
There are reasons not to expel him. Once he is expelled, then the Irish diplomats in Moscow are expelled. Any miniscule chance you had at opening up a diplomatic dialogue is gone. Lets suppose there is an Irish person in Ukraine and the Russians overrun where he is. How do you try to help that person? Send over the FCA on an oul' exfiltration mission? Or if an Irish person is arrested in Moscow. Where will the regular consular assistance come from?
There is a lot of metal in a tank. Worth a fair few quid if you can get it away.
As part of our contribution to the war effort we could send over some of our native ethnic group over to do likewise.
BTW can't believe that old Belarus is able to tow a tank.
Can't imagine the couple of dealers left are going to find it any easier to flog them in the coming weeks what with the name linked to a warlike sanction hit country.
Someone shoudl bomb the Minsk tractor works and do the world a favour.
Seems it's legit, she was speaking to Euronews
Strange story. Disturbing if true. Many claims...
Twenty-four Jamaican students who yesterday arrived in Lviv from Kharkiv by train are now being forced to walk 20km to Poland. The country’s foreign affairs minister, Kamina Smith, said they were blocked from boarding the bus that was carrying the students to Poland.
Someone in the thread earlier posted video purporting to be of Ukranian soldiers smearing pig grease on bullets for the Chechens. Who knows whether it's true, but Ireland does not need to be naive here.
And we can't throw away decades of a position without serious debate within the country. The Ireland that existed two weeks ago was not the worst country on earth, we shouldn't change its fundamentals in a few days.
EU sending jets to Ukraine. Ok. Fine. But the world order appears to be changing very quickly. I don't fear change in itself, but I fear decisions made without long-term strategy in mind.
Exactly. People talking about Nuclear war here. There worse than Tony H scraemongering the old people during COVID. It ain't going to happen.
And I'd go too, if I was asked. The bag is still packed and under the bed since last time...
Internet wisdom: MOAB/FOAB or fertiliser plant.
Who said that?
I agree, Unfortunately, the opposite happened the new government decided to end the separatist uprising militarily. Russia was not going to sit on the sidelines and watch people who love everything Russia stands for be slaughtered,
Really not a fan of sanctioning innocent russians, putting them into economic misery just because they're Russian while we won't affect Irish employees working for companies with Russian connections. For example a russian ballet company have been cancelled by Ticketmaster.
Aughnish in Limerick is owned by a Russian company called Rusal which is owned by a Russian Oligarch that has previously had sanctions put on it by the US (and then exceptioned)
No, nuke would be way brighter and explode above the ground to maximise the damage. That looks like an explosion on the ground
The poor bast* is putting his life on the line, standing up to a dictator that kills enemies in horrible fashion and he still can't impress the mother.
It means Vlad can tell his citizens, look I told you the west are trying to take over Ukraine. A bad PR move in my opinion. Never interrupt your enemies when they are making mistakes.
More Russian lies.
No one was getting slaughtered.
There is no genocide in the contested regions.
That is disgraceful lie of the Putinazis.
Ukraine was prepared to give federal powers to those regions but not a veto on all of Ukraine's future.
That would bring NATO directly into it, which is unlikely to happen.
Is that speculated/guessed or confirmed? I wasn't aware anyone had managed to confirm their meaning yet.
So we won't expel them because the Irish lads will lose their jobs? So Irish jobs are more important than Ukrainians lives? Typical really.
Imagine being so naive to believe that irish diplomats would have any impact on anything.
Interesting article about what led Putin to take this course of action - plenty of missed opportunities to take the tension down a notch or 10.

I will take it that you are joking yes?
Those are strictly for delivering nukes, so be thankful you haven't seen much of them.
With the talk of giving Ukraine EU status, it would effectively be us entering into the war.
I'm pretty sure we're the only country that needs a referendum for that type of stuff. Could it be the Irish people that will have to decide whether the continent goes to war or not?
That's some amount of responsibility.
More likely to do with transport links being severed and possibility of riots once banks fall.
If Putin has genuinely gone full retard I don't see how anyone outside Russia can stop his gallop.
Our actions show it. He'll be expelled once the EU decide to do it this week.
I don't know what you are going on about jobs.
You've obviously not travelled very much in your time.
