There is no political path out for Russia to back down, nor any military need to yet. Yes, it appears they are making hard going of getting headway here, but they have only half their readied forces deployed.
It will be a few days and casualties more than expected, but Kiev and the country are still likely to fall sadly.
The real question is the long term strategy, because quite frankly it appears there is none. They will take the country, but I cannot see how they will hold it.

I am reminded that whenever i go on holiday to sunny countries they are populated by Russians. As part of this i would like to see places like in the Carribbean, Mexico etc ban Russian visitors.
When their travel and other perks are severely restricted they will start to ask why, why why, what have we done.
The typical Russian who travels to the Carribbean and other similar areas can afford it. They are not the poor populace, they are the ones who are educated, wealthy and can effect change.

Just on that, this is a decision by Lufthansa to avoid Russian airspace. That was announced on German media an hour or two ago. LH management does not want to risk their aircraft being forced to land or worse as payback for Germany not just authorising arms shipments but also releasing their own anti tank weapons and Stingers from Bundeswehr depots.

Hopefully Zelensky and co get through the night. He knows he’s a dead man walking and could have escaped abroad like other leaders have done in wars. But every night he gets through this turns this more and more against Russia. It keeps the pressure on the west to keep up the action on Russia, and obviously motivates his country. (Now I’m sure there’s someone here who’ll tell me of his past and there will be mistakes there, no leader is perfect and squeaky clean).
I fully believe he’s had a massive impact in getting some of the sanctions and weapons deliveries across the line. The sight of a leader under attack in his capital calling out his allies for not helping is one of the enduring images. If a leader had fled or been killed early, would the west have continued with the more stronger sanctions? He’s embarrassed the Italians and others into finally joining into sanctions and called out the Germans over weapons
Even when he’s inevitably taken out, it will push more and more of Russia’s fragile allies and apologists away from them. I don’t think anyone can continue to turn a blind eye if Russia kill the leader of a country in his own city. It might turn India, Middle East, even China. I imagine Zelensky knows this, he’s stuck it out knowing his fate, what a leader.
