Blue-on-blue incidents (or red on red in this case?) are unfortunately not that uncommon and have happened to all armies. It certainly gives Russian pilots even more to worry about, especially given the apparent failure of Russian SEAD efforts so far.

Got chills reading about the Ghost of Ukraine, the fighter pilot who allegedly downed six Russian aircraft in a single day. Whether or not it's true is immaterial right now. What's important is the symbolism of that and the morale boost a legend like that gives to people.
I've been following the war on @gavinsblog's excellent Ukraine list on Twitter. From what's been discussed there, it seems to be a combination of factors.On one hand, it looks as if Russian PGMs aren't as precise, or indeed as readily available as they would have liked. Second, it looks as if they targeted runways and support infrastructure which, when combined with the accuracy issues, would mean that a number of aircraft would have survived those strikes, bearing in mind that any strike would likely at least start with stand-off weapons as those airfields are likely bristling with radar-laid flak guns, and surface to air missile batteries. Thirdly, it looks to me as if the Ukrainian Air Force keeps moving their assets around from base to base so that a base that is housing Flankers one day might just be hosting a few decrepit An-2s the next.
Finally, it seems the Ukrainian military knew what was coming and prepared accordingly. Their armed forces have come a long way since the dark days of 2014 and while they're still using mostly Russian-designed equipment, they seem to have shifted to more NATO-inspired tactics and have certainly taken lessons from previous Russian operations as well as NATO operations against Iraq and Afghanistan.
