Serbia and Russia have long since been allies. Another example of the complexity of history in south east Europe- they regard one another as Slavic orthodox brothers. The Russian Turkish dimension was mentioned here a few times and historically is probably the most bitter one here vs Orthodox Christians (eg Serbs) and Ottoman Turks. They’ve some periods of peace but Russia and turkey have been at each others throats for centuries.
Far as I can make out there’s no external sea route out or into the Black Sea unless via Turkish waters?
Would the Ukrainians really accept that? I know the alternative seems apocalyptic but those terms would be appalling.
With all due respect, you've got to be kidding. Have you studied any conflicts or history of conflicts? The two WW, Korea, Vietnam? If you haven't, well every day this week is a schoolday I suppose.
That's exactly what I'm hoping .
Neutral State occupied and controlled by Russia and sod what the 40+ million Ukrainians think
Honestly, I don't see much of a choice for Ukraine right now. I'd love to see them fight on - but to what end would it be? How long would they have? Days at best.
In fact where the Russian army is now in Kiev it's almost the equivalent of the Russians reaching Berlin in 1945 and accepting German offer of a ceasefire and talks.
All things considered, this is pretty shite after 2 days. They've conquered a bunch of fields.
Yeah I'm familiar with what happened but in my own experience I've yet to meet a non-Russian Eastern European person who speaks Russian ("natively") who seemed happy about it.
Russia have enough reserves and more coming in everyday from the sale of oil and gas and Europe will not impose sanctions on oil or gas as they need it and will not shut down the supply. Russia are playing a game of chess and every move the west has made so far has been anticipated. By the time they have control of Ukraine they will be more or less self sufficient and the impact of sanctions will diminish further.
Ireland could and should send our anti tank weapons
I think, the more this goes on; it becomes clear this is a tipping point for Putin. It's the beginning of the end.
Shaun Lawson's analysis seems pretty good, to be honest.
Kiev's not very far from the Belarussian border. It is obviously the capital of Ukraine and its administrative centre, but does anyone think that the Ukraine government thought that, in the event of an invasion, Russia wouldn't be able to reach it? I would have surely thought they'd have considered that and contemplated the contingencies. I would be surprised if they don't fight until either most of Ukraine is under Russian occupation and/or Russia offer reasonable terms to a ceasefire.
I think you might be underestimating Ukraine's fight, they also have I would guess a decent supply of modern weaponry from other countries. I think it could drag on for a number of weeks possibly.
Lot of ancient russian hardware as well, also how motivated are 90 percent of the Russian soldiers?
We do have a limited supply of Javelins ,AT4s and Gustav 84mm anti tank weapons
We could actually. They are already using Javelins.
Both of them?.... :)
There was a much more somber analysis on Michael Portillo’s show on Times Radio. Suggesting we’re getting a little carried away by images of resistance and the slowness of the advance. Suggesting that the occupation of Kiev and the surrender / capture / killing of Zelensky is an inevitability over the weekend. Followed by the installation of a new government.
I don’t see any other outcome either

Good thread that on the whereabouts of oligarches megayachts
Citizens of the EU would feel a lot more comfortable if the EU agreed to start decoupling themselves from Russia Permanently.
It would take years but it needs to start closing all ties to Russia in relation to energy, infrastructure, Finance, Service etc.
Russia is not and never will be compatible with the western world.
I think Macron was right in relation to a EU Army and Funded by the EU.
About time, too.
Russia has gone too far with its revanchist babble.
Any one want to sponsor a ticket to Monaco ...
Asking for a friend
If Zelenskiy supports talks, then we should support him, no? I don't think the terms have been released, but happy to be corrected if they have.
Fair play @For Forks Sake
dont want to encourage the russians to attack the under water cables off the irish coast and send us all back to the bronze age
They're just jealous they didn't have the cojones to move on Taiwan the way he's done with Ukraine...
I don't even have fiber broadband yet ,
He's right. A lot of the resistance stuff is mostly for morale (nothing wrong with that - plenty of bravery on show). But Russia has, so far, only committed a fraction of it's forces on Ukraine's borders. You get the feeling if they wanted to smash the country's military and infrastructure up at lightning speed they could do so with relative ease.
Which is why i'm not seeing the purpose in fighting on because there is no good end.
I dont have anything to say, just posting to follow thread as I can figure out how!
Was never a huge fan of David McCullough but fair fcuks to him interviewing putins rat here

It's pretty hard to fight a superior force that attacks from all directions (except west) and your own reserves aren't even mobilised when the war starts. The Ukrainians have put up a fight, but there's a limit to what they could (or should) do.
It's a very low morale for Russian soldiers, at the end they're fighting the most stupid war everyone can imagine. Ukraine is a culturally very close to Russia and till now was relatively friendly with Russia, It's insane and this shows how desperate Putin regime is at the moment. Russia weak is the most dangerous..
