What war crimes in particular?
Because we don't want to go to war with Russia ourselves. We'd only be a pawn in any geopolitical conflict.
Larger countries with big militaries are not getting swept away by emotion and cutting off diplomatic ties with Russia so why would we?
Posters who feel emotional about the invasion should not try to turn Ireland itself into a vehicle for their own political agenda. Ukraine is a far away country on the other side of Europe which borders Russia.
Maybe if he wants Ukraine to turn less to the West, he should work on making Russia less of a sh*thole country so that Ukraine would view Russia as a more attractive economic, defensive and cultural partner.
It's incel thinking played out on a grand stage. "You don't like me, so I will now become violent"
Probably, it's become abundantly clear they have been testing Western tolerances for a and Putin is now emboldened. Think of the fly bys over UK airspace in past couple of years and the war excerises of our coast a few weeks back.
it was only thing that got russians out of afghanistan and it wouldnt take 20 years the russians have already started to protest the war 1700 arrested yesterday and only start
whats ukraine other choice 1000 years of servitude ..
Shirley Putin from here on out can no longer set foot outside Russia? He can't just show up to the next G20, and wine and dine with Boris, Macron and Co ?? He will surely be arrested on the spot if the chance presents itselfs, and charged with all these war crimes?
Orban 5 weeks away from an election. I hope this is used heavily against him and people of Budapest remember the Budapest in "58 is Keiv tonight.
The history of Russian domination and genocide in Ukraine is brutal.
There's a combination of things at play, certainly he has made it clear that the cultural side of it in his view would dictate that Ukraine is Russian territory. Then, when you look at other Eastern Bloc countries that have benefited greatly from joining the EU that would make his policies in Russia look bad. A crumbling economy, a large nation next door joining the western economies and possibly western defence alliances. It doesn't look good, especially considering Belarus is a complete shithole and by all intents and purposes under his control.
Yeah but
In a crisis, it would be very much up to Putin how to react and whether to escalate. Like a US president, he has access to a nuclear briefcase, the Chegets, with nuclear launch code. According to an analysis by the Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey, the defence minister and chief of staff of the armed forces are also supposed to be involved, but in Putin’s Kremlin it is unclear whether they would act as any kind of brake on his actions.
So is it clear his inner circle would have the capacity to block him if he decided to go down in flames?
In his rambling mad eyed speech earlier in the week he said Ukraine wasn't a real country and was part of Russia.
He also hinted he doesn't accept the independence of any territory that was ever part of Russian or Soviet empires, up to East Germany.
It's quite misleading though.
Why not post a proper link, like this?

Maybe they don’t want to bend over to Vlad?
I would love to know the real reason why he's invaded.
Is he happy to have Ukraine as it was, just with close ties to Russia? I believe this is how it was in the USSR.
Does he want Ukraine as part of Russia? Which I think it was pre 1922?
It seems to be that he just doesn't want Ukraine to be so close to the west as Russia views Ukraine and Russia as having a very close relationship historically and culturally.
Ireland has always aligned itself against the colonial occupier. We know what it's like to be victimized and suppressed. This should be no different. The ambassador should be put on a Ryanair flight out of here with 24 hrs notice.
And turf out that Israeli gobshite for good measure while they are at it. **** these manipulative gaslighting ambassadors.
I don't mind rational and defensive arguments/disagreements in diplomacy.
However, straight up lying, I have a huge problem with.
If that's what you're going to end up with in any case, why put your population through a war before ending up there?
The 1st one was Turkish ya?
You have to wonder if these "accidents" are calculated moves, to see NATO's reaction to civilian NATO members assets being hit
TBH I'm more than a little creeped out by the desire by many here to see Ukraine become a battlefield for the next 10-20 years. A guerrilla resistance to Russian occupation would be brutal, considering how Russian forces are trained to deal with it.
History will not look kindly on German, Italy and Hungary for stopping the removal of Russia from SWIFT - Hungary is a big issue... they have been leaning east for some time.
Snake Island, located off the country’s southeastern shoreline, was approached by the two Russian vessels on Thursday after Vladimir Putin declared the start of an invasion at 6am in Moscow.
“I am Russian warship, repeat I am Russian warship,” the advancing vessel announced. “Proposing to put down the arms immediately to avoid bloodshed and unjustified deaths.
“In worst case, you will be hit with a bomb strike. I am repeating…,” they said, according to the translation by CNN.
Two Ukrainian guards engage in a brief exchange — “should I tell them to go f*** themselves?” — before responding with: “Russian warship, go f*** yourself”.
He isn't though
Putin may end up with annexing a few eastern regions with the rest of Ukraine disarmed and in disarray, which is bad (for us and our European/American allies), but hardly evidence of insanity or nihilism.
I know how the ordinary Irish utilitarian-materialist person thinks because I've come across it all my life. Any motivation which doesn't follow a simple cause and effect one-step logic is deemed a 'conspiracy theory' or unbelieveable. Because people "wouldn't do that. What would be the motivation? It makes no logical sense" etc., etc.
Or if its inescapable, like now, its attributed to 'insanity'.
Historically its normal, and the same pieces of territory have been fought over repeatedly over centuries.
The British forces which won the Crimean War were made up of roughly one-third Irish soldiers/sailors so its not even outside of Irish historical experience.
Why shouldn’t we?
The images are from last year….they only signed up today. Posting library images to accompany a verifiable story isn’t fake news
Engaging in bad faith diplomacy as usual. Do they think Zelensky is just going to wander into Minsk and not expect to be arrested and thrown into a kangaroo court and put on death row?
I can't really explain that, it would seem an obvious thing to me to do. However, I might suggest that 2 reasons could be we are seeing the ones that have NOT been mined, secondly the Ukrainians may have been expecting millions of people to flee major cities and did not want to endanger them.
Look like a Romanian flagged container ship was attacked in the black sea, 2nd one in 24 hour's
Seems to be from last year, a standard manouevre exercise (based on the comments in the thread)
Need to be very careful at this time to post reputable news updates I think.
Very true, but this idea that Putin wants to see the world burn is nonsense. He's driven by his position of authority/power along with the access to wealth/comforts. He's not going to give all that up just for kicks. There's a lot more going on, than these simplistic notions about his sanity.
It's never a good idea, if you want to keep communication channels open.
It is a surprise that such a large embassy has been allowed to continue to operate.
