The new Irish communist party
Agree Zelenskiy appears to be a solid and defiant leader. His communication in the last few days whilst giving a very serious and clear message brought with it an air of calm and strength. And knowing, as he made them statements, he is enemy number one.
The Ukrainians need him now more than ever. Putin obviously sees him as a huge threat as he keeps the Ukrainians defiant and wants to get his hands on him.
I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. With how poorly it has gone for Russia so far he could just be buying time to resupply and regroup for another push.
He's also Xi's bitch so you could be right he may be pandering to China too
He said that Biden was going in "too strong" by the installation of 7,000 more US troops in Germany - potentially "starting WW3".
Ukraine isn't part of NATO though.
The NATO alliance is the US, its cold war politics, showing the soviets who's boss. As I have said strategically Europe doesn't give a **** about the Ukraine like the US do. And they don't give a **** about Ukraine enough, to engage the Russians.
Unfortunately true!
We can console ourselves that it's not a real sport anyway. 😉
Yeah, plenty other dictator states that F1 will go running to.
Defending a Nato ally is not "going in too strong".
Biden is clearly showing that the Nato alliance actually means something.
Mad to think he was basically just a TV comedian a few years ago.
Government were pushed by Green Advocacy through electorate.
Japanese Nuclear accident caused backlash in 2012 elections which led to Nuclear plants being shut.
Greens want solar and wind at national level but won't let it be built at local level and middle class Germans vote for the Greens and Baerbock is now foreign minister.
Germany has loads of lignite within their control but Greens would prefer Gas even though the process of getting Gas from Russia to Germany nullifies all the green virtues of Gas over Lignite.
If they are not taking Gas from Moscow they would be taking Gas and Oil from or through somewhere under the influence of Turkey.
The German electorate put the politicians and government in their tight spot. The politicians didn't hook their fortunes to the Russian Oil and Gas industry by intention.
It won't exactly stop the invasion but it is better than hosting the Grand Prix
With aim that bad its amazing they did not hit Kinsale a couple of weeks ago.
Good. Russia is a pariah state and should be treated as such.
Boycott them everywhere, including in the fields of sports and culture.
Putin mightn't be but ordinary Russian may be annoyed and blame Putin. More protests in Russia are needed.
The comments are pretty amusing. Biden is too weak to actually defend Ukraine properly and coming in too strong and starting WW3 with this move.
Some posters here are so foaming-at-the-mouth about the West I suspect even the Taliban would be concerned about them.
Formula One has cancelled the Russian Grand Prix after the state’s invasion of Ukraine.
That could be a wayward missile like the Turkish ship hit yesterday.
Add lithium to that as well.
Not so much a question of "correct", but Kyiv is derived from the Ukrainian name and Kiev from the Russian though they are both transliterations. Ukraine want it to be called Kyiv however.
Holy Jesus, even the Taliban are not blaming NATO for the invasion unlike some demented loons here!
7,000 more US troops to Germany...
Romania flagged tanker hit by the Russian navy off Pivdennyi according to head of the Ukrainian defence forces.
Correctly noting that Putin as ex head of KGB/FSB prefers subterfuge rather than direct conflict doesn't mean I'm a PutinBot. Have I been playing a long game for the last number of years tormenting Enviro-loonies, People who spread mis-information about Ryanair and Bicycle evangelists just to de-cloak as a Putin Bot now. For him in his whole working life and private life as a Judo player he has always preferred to apply subtle directed pressure rather than brute force. His actions of the last few months are somewhat out of character for him. I think he is operating outside his area of competency by engaging in open war with a reasonably strong opponent.
But they already rejected Russian puppets ,
40 + million Ukrainians don't want to be Russian
I have to say this Zelenskiy guy, he is a solid leader
I noticed that this morning on Newstalk radio here. I began wondering if my pronunciation has been incorrect my entire life!
I wasn't thinking of a nuclear confrontation, in a conventional land and air battle, surely Russia have superiority in terms of manpower and hardware?
Russia have two million soldiers if required
These are doomsday situations, not the kind of deployment we see in Ukraine right now
I don't doubt that France ,the UK and Germany combined could not defeat Russia relatively decisively
The official name used now ,Kyiv, would be /i/ as in bin but either really. Key-ev is the anglicised version of it and close to what the Russians call it but not historically inaccurate. Kharkiv, in Ukrainian, is also known as Kharvov in Russian. Lviv or Lvov is the same.
Possibly a new Russian puppet "care-taker" government before "democratic elections" and Ukraine signs up to never join NATO.
The strategic angle of this for Russia still makes no sense to me. Whichever path they choose, life for ordinary Russians, which is already hard, is only going to get harder from here on in. I've always thought of Putin as shrewd and calculating, everything he did "made sense" in a Machiavellian way, but this invasion still makes utterly no sense.
