The strategic angle of this for Russia still makes no sense to me. Whichever path they choose, life for ordinary Russians, which is already hard, is only going to get harder from here on in. The official name used now ,Kyiv, would be /i/ as in bin but either really. Key-ev is the anglicised version of it and close to what the Russians call it but not historically inaccurate. Kharkiv, in Ukrainian, is also known as Kharvov in Russian. Lviv or Lvov is the same.
