Oh my god 😲😒
The look of disbelief from the interviewer says it all.
Agreed , Also if he’s caught it’d destroy any chance of a sequel to one of the best movies ever made “love in the big city 2”
Merkel outsourced German energy to Russia and frankly its Foreign policy.
That's not changed. Berlin needs to pick a side, though it already has.
Countries seldom stand on principle alone. Money and self interest have always been the chief motivating factors in conflict.
One wonders how world leaders could ever stomach meeting Putin in person at any event after this and the total lies he is and has been putting forth.
Odd way to put it. Germany doesn't have a choice right now, they are completely reliant on Russian gas and they can't change that in the short-term, not overnight and not in a year. All they can do is speed up plans for alternatives. It's likely Ukraine will fall, there's little the world can do to stop that.
Not a fan of the EU response but it is a bit hard to blame Germans etc. when are own are not arguing against them on this. I get we don't have the most power in the EU but still.
Even worse they also received guarantees from Russia
The conflict will almost certainly result in massive changes to European energy.
I have EU say it's strange, that for as long as I can remember, that how one crisis seems to neatly roll into the next.
Ukrainian President now wishes to sit down with Putin to discuss "neutrality".
True. But for some reason, even given that fertilizer prices are going to become a major world issue (a thread on boards has been going for months about fert prices in Ireland, it's one of the most imp threads on Boards) and even given that India has so many mouths to feed, I expected better from them. I don't know why.
BTW, China + India = 1/3 of the world population. That's representatives of one in three humans on the planet that from the outset don't appear to give a hoot about Russian actions. Not good.
Xi Jinping just asked Putin to negotiate with Ukraine. Not a condemnation of the invasion, but not directly endorsing it either (which they have been doing via their silence and ambiguity)
Estimates in Germany suggest that they have enough to get through the remainder of winter even if the gas were cut off now. Reserves can then be built up for next winter. Oil is a bigger issue for them to replace at present.
It's "peacekeeping"....just with guns, bombs and tanks being used against ukranian people...
He wants to surrender then. I'm not sure that's even Putin's plan to be honest. Would he hold back now with his troops in Kyiv?
A Taliban statement
"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan calls for restraint by both parties. All sides need to desist from taking positions that could intensify violence. We are closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine and express concerns about the real possibility of civilian casualties."
Germany made a conscious decision, it's not like they were ambushed.
They decided to close down 60%of their power plants in a 10yr period without planning to replace. Merkel decided to proceed with nordstream months after Crimea.
Germany calculated that dead civilians there were not going to beat cheap gas.
That pragmatic approach still applies.
Is that confirmed? I'm seeing (recent?) pictures of him kitted out in combat gear.
According to CNN a Russian military airfield near the Ukrainian border has been hit by a long range missile. No clear details but it could be one that missed.
Most European countries have enough supplies to make it through this winter, that's not the issue. The problem is the next one (and the ones after that). Oil can be sourced from elsewhere, but gas, structurally, is the key issue. Remember, Germany is a European, if not world, leader on alternative energy. All we can hope is that this conflict really accelerates infrastructure plans for Europe to get itself off Russian gas.
Chernozem is going to become a word people have never heard of before but suddenly find very important.
Were they hacked?
Things are bad when the Taliban are the voice of reason.
I fully agree, they are absolutely not blameless.
The neck on this fucker!
Just in, Putin says he is ready for negotiations. Could purely be for "optics" to please China, etc.
Holy Shít. Sean Penn is over there making a documentary.
I would bet that his negotiating position is one of regime change
