I know what you are saying. But let's be honest if things continue like this NATO are going to have to get more directly involved. These economic sanctions will take time to have any effect.
Meanwhile how many Ukrainian people will be killed....
Some official comments coming in from Kremlin. They say they are not planning on occupying the country but do not recognise Ukrainian government as democratic.
Sounds like regime change to pro russia is the goal if we are to believe them.
Nope, that's a direct conflict with 30 NATO members and no supply line. Russia would lose that confrontation comprehensively and very quickly.
Thats Hillarious, did they forget about their own country
When are they going to do something about the oppressed russian people
Bring in pro-Russian leaders and split Ukraine into two parts, like East and West Germany
I can see that happening. Amazing to think Putin was there when the Berlin wall came down, and the USSR with it. Perhaps, as others have sugegsted, he is stuck in that moment to some extent, and has a sentimental attachment to walls as a result.
Yes I am, and since day one I have been calling out trolls seeking to deflect discussion from Russia and the actions of a vile dictator with whataboutery aimed at the US EU UN NATO. This a war launched by a dictator aimed at a Democracy, it is not a fantasy NATO bashing sideshow.
Live speech you’ll have to roll it back. I’ll see if I can do a screen grab.
Link?
You'd have to be a fool to believe him.
Putin also said he doesn't recognise Ukraine's right to exist, that it is Russian. That Russia laws claims to anywhere ever once part of the Russian or Soviet empires.
Russia have already broken one treaty with Ukraine, they would not respect any other unless deterred by force.
If Ukraine gives up weaponry next time Ukraine does something Russia disapproves of, they can just walk back in. And next time they won't leave. Like Belarus.
Neutral would not mean independent, it would mean being a puppet Russian state.
And what would have been the alternative? A direct confrontation would broaden the theatre of war and you'd be claiming we were failing a whole lot more countries.
That video is from a bloody video game.
As i understand, both Sweden and Finland have a free ticket to join NATO,meaning one phonecall and a signature would be enough within hours to join if needed.
Both countries have one foot in NATO allready anyway.
And the nordic countries also have their own defence alliance
But makes some sense in contrast to the drivel of film stars doing Imagine in the early days of COVID!
Making no sense. Waffling on and going around in circles. A scumbag of the highest order.
Ah come on, are you that naive? What do you expect the world to do? Send troops? That will just trigger a bigger response from Russia and makes things worse with even more casualties. Also, for anyone who has read the updated Russian doctrine on the when nuclear weapons are justified from a few years ago will now, that bar is lower than people think - they can even use it against conventional warfare.
The west is doing the next best thing. Sending supplies to Ukraine and crippling the Russian economy. We are opening our doors for refugees.
A modern war can't be compared with WW2 or WW1 - now that nations are armed with nuclear weapons the balance of power is skewed.
Sergei Lavrov-What if Ireland forbid use of English language what are you going to do-basically compares Ireland to Ukraine-if in Ireland they forbade English language after independance, what are GB going to do? obviously denazifiy us?
I see the Russian foreign minister Moscow there just said in off the cuff illustration “What if Ireland forbid use of English language what are you going to do?” And then continued to talk about neonazism. (At about 10:25am during speech)
Yes, politicians are easily bought.
Yes they fear Russia but inviting the US to Russia doorstep was never going to be pretty. They poked the bear way more than once too often.
The US are going to be the only winners out of this and they can just sit back and laugh.
Love the planted question there from the Chinese for Lavrov who they couldn’t get on air, but conveniently had the question in writing.
Unbelievable the shite they are saying the past few days.
Putin also said that this is about removing a Nazi from power. Forgive us if we don't take him at his word. He has to at least vaguely claim some reason for invading outside of we want their land.
BBC report on possible plan of attack...
A source in Ukrainian counter-intelligence has told Ukrainska Pravda website details of Russia's plan to take control of the city to take control of the country. It's all unconfirmed but this is what they report Russia wants to do:
Just wondering now , does the EU have to consider ramping up spend on an army?
can’t really rely on the USA
Russia has probably pushed more countries toward NATO after this. I can see Finland giving the NATO freephone number a call any day now
That was hyperbole more than anything else, but the point I was making was what are they holding sanctions back for? Any further escalation would be way past something that sanctions alone could stop
I was watching a show going over history of Ukraine and kiev. It’s weird hearing the foreign minister of Russia talk about the Ukrainians trying to ban Russian and some sort of genocide. That’s exactly what the Russians did back in the day.
They starved the people there and shipped in Russians to repopulate the area. Mad that, he doesn’t seem to remember that.
Russian propaganda already using the term "terrorists", as it invades the country. Any resistance will be referred to as terrorists.
Yeah a lot of those issues are excuses made up for the camera to hide the main reason of Putin's love of the Soviet Union. It is like Hitler saying he just wants to unite the German speaking people or whatever. It is just something to make it palatable. I agree it should be possible to remove sanctions if Russia backs off. That is always on the table and Russia is already aware of this. Judging by the protests many in Russia seem to get the connection between them invading and them pulling back.
If you want to block NATO's expansion then you need some guarantee that Russia won't invade its neighbours at which point they are either useless or military (and they are in NATO in all but name). It is also removing some of the sovereignty of those nations as they can not make their own alliances due to an aggressive 3rd party. A better response would be to limit the range of weaponry stationed in those countries but let them in defense agreements. So that Russia can't be attacked too directly but also are aware that there are consequences for attacking its neighbours.
That is a reflection on the Idiot of a President in between who was unknowingly driving Putin's policy goals at zero cost.
Putin is not a war monger by default. As ex FSB big boss his preferred modus operandii is methods of subterfuge, not direct conflict.
If Trump were still in Office this war would not be happening and Putin would be extending his influence covertly. Trump would probably be undermining the current Ukranian Government for not delivering him dirt on Biden.
